Meet Genesis, a hardworking and generous 12th grader at McKinley Tech. Genesis shares that she likes “that Upward Bound also feels like a family and not just a resource…” She enjoys her connection with staff and other students, and the opportunities Upward Bound has to offer.

One of Genesis’ favorite Upward Bound memories is from the group trip to St. Thomas, USVI. Genesis remembers “riding on the tour bus up the island with everyone on the trip and experiencing the view, laughing, talking, and just enjoying the ride.”

Genesis is a senior currently in the college admissions process, but she shared that her dream college is Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. Good luck, Genesis!

To celebrate Women’s History Month, Genesis and her school’s Girl Boss Leadership Academy are hosting a series of events. She shares, “they are inclusive and expose our students to women in other career fields, mental wellness, and networking.”

Born on January 29th, 1954, in Kosciusko, Mississippi, a star by the name of Oprah Winfrey was born. Many know the name Oprah, she is a talk show host, actress, multimedia executive, and multimillionaire philanthropist, and she has donated over $80 million to charity, but did you know Oprah Winfrey was an Upward Bound Alumni?
As Black History Month History comes to an end and Women's History Month begins, we celebrate our Upward Bound alums that give back to the community.
Happy Women's History Month!

Did you know that Angela Bassett was an Upward Bound Alumn? Well, it's true! Bassett actually attended the program through St. Petersburg Junior College! Not only is Angela Bassett an amazing actress with over 20 prestigious awards to her name, but she also owns a Master's degree from Yale University! Basset has been known to speak fondly of her time with Upward Bound and the many other extracurriculars she participated in, like the national honor society and student government! Introducing our February Student Spotlight!

Meet Kimber, a kindhearted and determined 12th grader studying at Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School! Kimber’s Upward Bound experience began virtually, but she continues to highlight the family feeling among students and staff. She shares that she enjoys the “big support system” that allows her “to share things that would be mundane or boring to others” and have “support where I would otherwise do things by myself.”
Although she was nervous stepping out of her comfort zone and starting Summer Institute, knowing very few people, it became her favorite memory in the program. Kimber shared that she is usually shy and apprehensive about meeting new people, but the program led to amazing friendships and great connections!

Kimber is currently in the college process and is awaiting decisions, so her dream school status is pending. Good luck Kimber!

This month, as part of Black History Month, Kimber is directing a Black History Month play as part of her school’s Black Student Union. We are confident in her leadership skills and proud of her initiative in educating her peers.

Pictured- Some fun selfies with Kimber and her UB friends, a group trip to see a show at The Kennedy Center, and Kimber participating in one of our Lab Days during Summer Institute 2022.
