Alumna Karen Barker Marcou '95 has spent her career expanding access to justice. Crediting AUWCL's clinical program and mentors like Professors Susan Bennett, Pat Roth and Jamie Raskin for shaping her path, Marcou went on to co-found what is now Volunteer Legal Advocates after encountering the barriers pro bono attorneys faced outside of law firm affiliations. Dozens of AUWCL graduates have volunteered or worked on staff with VLA since 2008, and Marcou hopes even more Eagles will join in turning legal training into life-changing advocacy. Torrey Feldman '20 graduated from AUWCL and built a legal career that took her from commercial litigation at Baker Donelson to endorsement deals at Adidas to Generalist Counsel for the FIFA World Cup 2026. Her advice to students: don't discount the pressure you're navigating now, because how you handle it today is what prepares you for your own version of the World Cup. When Nabila Aguele ’05 stepped into the role of chief executive officer of the Malala Fund, it marked more than a leadership transition. For more than 30 years, Dana Martin ’84 dedicated his career to law, international development, and regional cooperation across Latin America and the Caribbean. Today, his work looks very different. Instead of negotiating international financing packages or helping structure regional energy markets, he spends much of his time helping distribute food to families in need in South Arlington, Virginia. American University Washington College of Law is proud to celebrate alumna Mina Malik ’98, who has been appointed to New York City’s Mayor’s Advisory Committee on the Judiciary.

A respected attorney and public servant, Malik has built an accomplished career advancing justice and strengthening the legal profession. In this new role, she will help identify and evaluate highly qualified candidates for appointment to New York City’s courts, helping shape the city’s judiciary for years to come.

Her appointment is another example of the impact AUWCL alumni continue to make in positions of leadership and influence.
