Catherine McGovern ‘25 is a double major in psychology and media & communication studies with a minor in Marketing. Here’s more about Catherine and her time in the MCS department.

💒 Fav spot on campus: Mullen Library or the Pryz Patio

📹 Must Take Class: MDIA 302: Intro to Video Production

⭐ Campus Involvement: Co-Public Relations Officer for Film Society, Orientation Advisor, Content Developer for the School of Arts and Sciences, Honors Program, Phi Eta Sigma, Psi Chi

❤️ Tell me a little about your experience with one of the activities you are a part of: I’ve learned so much about social media management through my job as a content developer for the School of Arts and Sciences. I've had the opportunity to be creative in highlighting members of the University community. It's been one of my favorite experiences at CUA!

❤️ Why you chose CUA: I was interested in CUA because it was a Catholic school that wasn't too big or too small and its city location (because I knew I would never be bored!) However, what really sealed the deal for me was visiting campus. The people and the environment were warm, welcoming, and friendly and I knew I had to go to school here.

🎬 Fun fact: My favorite movies are Dead Poets Society and Dunkirk!

Your plans or ideas for what you'd like to do after graduation: My dream is to work in PR or content production for the entertainment industry and work on press tours.

❤️ How do you feel CUA or the MCS department helped you along the way? I'd always had an interest in media and content production but it wasn't until I took “Intro to Media & Comm Studies” that I decided to double major. While taking the production courses in the MCS department, I also realized I can use my passion for content production and movies as a career path. The technical media skills with the cameras and in the lab have made me more confident as I find a job. Also, the staff of the dept. is incredibly supportive of their students and truly cares about their success.

🎥 Major/Minor: Media & Communications with a minor in Anthropology

🚏 Why Did You Choose CUA: I wanted to be in D.C. but did not want an overwhelming, city school feel. CUA offered the perfect balance, with both an amazing location and a huge, beautiful campus.

❤ Favorite thing about CUA: I developed amazing relationships with friends and professors and gained both hard and soft skills that set me up for success in my career. (Being within walking distance to Murry and Paul's and Masala Story is a close second).

💡 Advice for Undergrads: Build and invest in strong friendships with other students and professors! Every opportunity, academic success and adventure I experienced in college happened because I surrounded myself with people who encouraged, challenged and supported me throughout my four years.

💙 How do you feel CUA or the MCS department helped you along the way? The MCS department has stellar professors who genuinely care about student success, and students with varying interests who want to help each other succeed. MCS students may go in all different directions, but the common analytical, practical and social skills we learned in MCS classes prepared us well for various career paths.

💿📀 Fun Fact About Yourself: I have a massive record collection, and one of the best things about being in the DMV area for college was exploring local record shops. Check out Som Records on 14th St. NW!

🧩 What did you do after graduation? I went back home to New Jersey and worked at a radio station where I previously interned. A few months later, I started at Avoq. Throughout this time (and even today), I kept in touch with my MCS professors, who were incredibly helpful in keeping an eye out for opportunities, offering job-hunting tips, and serving as valuable resources.

❤️ Favorite thing about CUA: The amazing friends and professors that I met, and the strong relationships that I developed.

💡Advice for Undergrads: Keep exploring whatever talents you have in a relevant area of study. Challenge yourself by leaving your comfort zone, make mistakes, and learn from them.

💙 How do you feel CUA or the MCS department helped you along the way?: I learned from so many amazing professors and worked with many talented individuals within the communication space and was given opportunities to bring my wildest ideas to life through various projects. The MCS department gave me the right tools, literally and metaphorically, to allow me to actualize my goals and aspirations.

🎨 Fun Fact About Yourself: I love to draw and watch action TV shows in my free time.

🏦 How do you like Columbia's Strategic Communications MA program? NYC?: I have met people that I would have never met outside Columbia, all of whom bring a rich background and an abundance of knowledge. My professors are all enthusiastic and willing to go above and beyond when it comes to educating us on various aspects of strategic communication. The experience I've had at Columbia so far has been enriching and has prepared me to be a professional within the communication field.

❤️ Why I chose CUA: I chose CUA for its Catholic identity and its close proximity to home (Rockville, MD)...And the beauty of the Basilica is something you simply can't pass up on!
❤️ How do you feel CUA/MCS has helped you along the way: The MCS dept. is a true family: from Professors Akhavan and Anderson overseeing my athletic comms. career to Ms. Moser's support with the equipment, the attention you receive as a student is one of a kind. What I've learned through the MCS dept. has helped me tremendously in launching my career.

Congratulations to Jacob Navarro for his acceptance to CUA's Columbus School of Law! Jacob credits his MCS degree and documentary production for informing his approach to studying entertainment law: "My favorite aspect of video production was the time spent off camera with subjects, building trust and rapport to give their stories a voice. I hold the belief that the entertainment industry can be a powerful vessel for creators while also being an environment immune to exploitation, harassment, and inequality. I hope to make a difference!”
