Physics Department at CUA

Physics Department at CUA The department has programs of study and research in theoretical and experimental physics.

Research programs stress the areas of astrophysics, biophysics, condensed matter, heliophysics, materials science and nuclear physics. The University's Institute for Astrophysics and Computational Sciences is housed in the physics department. The Vitreous State Laboratory has received wide recognition as one of the outstanding university centers for the study of glassy materials. This laboratory c

ombines faculty from Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Engineering. Research includes both the fundamental properties of glasses as well as studies of applications in such areas as fiber optics, nanodevice physics, mechanical properties and nuclear waste treatment. It also houses the nanofabrication facility for research on nanospintronics, nanoelectronics and device physics.

HAPPENING NOW | Significant Space Weather Event

Welcome to solar max!

If you haven’t heard yet, we’re currently experiencing the strongest solar energetic particle event of Solar Cycle 25! Thanks to a long duration X-class flare near center disk last night, we’ve seen a significant rise in protons at SOHO, GOES, and STEREO A reaching solar energetic particle event levels at each location. The GOES >10 MeV channel peaked around 1,064 pfu while the GOES >100 MeV channel peaked around 4 pfu.

This flare launched a large fast halo coronal mass ejection expected to reach Earth by midday tomorrow, October 10th, 2024, with a potential to reach Kp = 9 during the arrival! Due to this CME, NOAA SWPC has a G4 or greater watch for the 10th and 11th. This CME may also impact STEREO A, Solar Orbiter, Lucy, Mars, and Juno based on our simulation results.

P.S. there’s an additional X-class flare on-going as we speak!

Sincerely,

The M2M Space Weather Analysis Office

South America witnesses a ‘ring of fire’, the final solar eclipse of 2024

A full eclipse was visible from Chile and Argentina, with other parts of the world seeing a partial ‘crescent’ eclipse.

The Catholic University of America’s Vitreous State Laboratory (VSL) recently received a $31 million four-year contract to assist the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) with one of the largest global nuclear cleanup efforts.

The principal investigator for the project is Ian Pegg, VSL director and professor of physics.
