SPA Leadership Human Rights and Equality

SPA Leadership Human Rights and Equality The Human Rights and Equality Issue Group is part of American University's SPA Leadership Program which focuses on combating sex trafficking of minors.

The Human Rights and Equality Issue Group is apart of American University's School of Public Affairs' Leadership Program, which focuses on creating change through social action projects. This year, the Human Rights and Equality Issue Group is focusing on combating sex trafficking of minors through an awareness event and petitioning the D.C. Council and Mayor for our social action project. We hope

to raise awareness to the public about the prevalence of sex trafficking and bring about change through legislation that will require police officers more training when dealing with sex trafficking victims. About the SPA Leadership Program:

The SPA Leadership Program, created in 1990, offers students the experience, skills, and knowledge to prepare them for leadership roles in public service and in life. Following a competitive application process, students advance together through the four-year, 15-unit course of study that culminates in a Certificate in Advanced Leadership Studies. Topics covered include theories of leadership, famous leaders, social justice, ethics, negotiation, conflict resolution, public speaking, teamwork, and community-based learning. In the first year of the program, students meet once a week in class to study leaders and leadership skills, such as public speaking, teamwork and effective communication. First-year students apply these skills outside the classroom as they work in small groups to design and execute social action projects of their own making. Social action projects allow students to learn about pressing social issues and work successfully with others to create pathways to change. First-year students are also paired with an older Leadership student who acts as a mentor to help guide the student through the first year of college.

With only 7 DAYS left until our awareness event, lets open dialogue about THE DEFINITION OF SEX-TRAFFICKING. People often confuse s*x-trafficking with prostitution, but in fact, they are very different. The importance about this difference was highlighted when Holly Smith, a victim of s*x-trafficking, spoke out in 2012 about how she was mistreated by law-enforcement officials as a s*x-trafficking victim. "Without receiving compassion or empathy from the police, a child may come to view anyone involved in his or her case with contempt and distrust, thereby compromising the child’s openness towards after-care services," Smith stated. Learn more about the need to include police educational training about s*x-trafficking below, and attend our EVENT on April 1st @ 6pm in Ward 2 to be part of the CHANGE. Lets combat s*x-trafficking together!

Why survivor-informed law enforcement training is so important to child s*x trafficking victims services, as well as other forms of human trafficking.
