Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler was the first Black woman to earn a medical degree in the USA?

Born in Christiana, Delaware and inspired by her Aunt who regularly cared for neighbors, Dr. Crumpler began her career as a nurse in Charlestown, Massachusetts in 1852. In 1860, Dr. Crumpler became the first Black woman to be accepted to the New England Female Medical College in Boston (which was the first college to award medical doctorate degrees to women). Although she took a leave of absence to care for her husband while he was sick, she re-enrolled and received her "Doctress of Medicine" on March 1, 1864. As the New England Female Medical College merged with Boston University Medical School in 1874, Dr. Crumpler remains the only African American woman to receive a medical degree from the school.

Dr. Crumpler devoted her career to former enslaved people and people with limited access to medical care. She also became the first Black author of a medical book with her work, "A Book of Medical Discourses". We honor her courageous work and recognize how she shaped the future of medicine for all of us.
