Hey y'all!

Have a paper to write on ASEAN-related topics? Need some brainstorming on Thai foreign affairs? Just really interested in the late Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej? Perhaps you have a niche curiosity for the 1992 border dispute with Myanmar? We definitely don't want to interrupt your last two weeks of fierce studying (or suffering).

However, if you're interested in an intellectually stimulating event on U.S.-Thai foreign relations during the reign of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, we'd love to you have join us tomorrow, Wednesday, December 6th from 3:30-5PM.

We'll be collaborating with ASEAN Studies Initiative in SIS to bring Assistant Professor Dr. M.L.Pinitbhand Paribatra, former Director of the International Program at the Faculty of Political Science, Thammasat University, Thailand's second oldest institute of higher education. He'll be discussing topics mentioned above and so much more!

COOL EVENT ALERT ///////////////////////

Our parent organization, the ASEAN Studies Initiative, will be hosting a huge symposium called “The Philippines as 2017 ASEAN Chair and Singapore as 2018 Incoming ASEAN Chair.”

It will be on Monday, November 20th from 9AM-5PM in the SIS Founder's room. Lunch is definitely included and will be located in MGC 2-4! This is an extremely timely and exciting event and we'd like as many students to attend!

If you're interested in Southeast/East Asian affairs, especially in relation to the U.S., there is no better time to listen in than this year aka right after U.S. finishes up with meeting ASEAN/EAS members for the various summits within the region.

Please RSVP to Lam-Anh Le at [email protected] and please include if you're able to stay for lunch so she could mark you down! If you'd like to volunteer for the event, please be sure to include that in your email as well.

We hope to see you there!

An extended description here:
To celebrate the fact that this 2017 symposium is held during ASEAN’s 50th anniversary, we have invited the founding Co-Chair of the U.S. Congressional Caucus on ASEAN (Congresswoman Ann Wagner) to offer opening remarks. We have also invited the Charge d'Affaires a.i.. Mr. Patrick Chuasoto of the embassy of the Republic of the Philippines, and Mr. Patrick Murphy, Deputy Assistant Secretary at the State Department’s Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs (EAP), to offer keynote remarks. In addition, Mr. Matthew Pottinger, Senior Director of Asian Affairs at the National Security Council, has been invited to give the luncheon keynote address, and Ambassador Ashok Kumar Mirpuri has been invited to deliver remarks to open the session on Singapore.

In addition to official representatives from most of the ASEAN and other EAS countries, it is anticipated that U.S. participation will include officials from the State Department, the Defense Department, and other government departments, as well as key figures in the academic, think-tank, business, diplomatic and NGO communities in the Washington area. We anticipate an audience of some 100 invited participants.
