Advances in the treatment of major blood cancers have saved more than 25 million years of life in the United States over the past 75 years. But gains have not reached everyone equally, and instability in research funding puts continued progress at risk.

In a new analysis, E. Anders Kolb, MD, and colleagues from Blood Cancer United found that survival progress remains limited for people diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia and across most major blood cancer types among Black individuals.

September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month. Throughout the month, ASH will highlight the people, programs, partnerships, and progress helping advance Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) research and care.

Bringing the SCD community together is an important part of that effort. The Sickle Cell Disease Coalition creates opportunities for people living with SCD, caregivers, advocates, clinicians, researchers, and organizations to connect and collaborate through:

◼️ SCD Unified Action Forum — aligning around shared priorities
◼️ Annual Summit — advancing whole-person SCD care
◼️ Peer Learning Exchanges — sharing knowledge and building skills

This September, the ASH Foundation is also working to raise $10,000 to support sickle cell disease initiatives. Every contribution helps advance research, care, and resources for people living with SCD.

Help reach the $10,000 goal. Donate to the ASH Sickle Cell Disease Initiative Fund today: https://ow.ly/kMNh50ZGHKp

The future of hematology research is at risk.

A proposed rule from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) would dramatically reshape the federal grantmaking process by allowing agencies to terminate grants, override scientific peer review recommendations, and limit scientific dissemination. These changes could delay discoveries, disrupt clinical trials, and threaten advances in blood cancer, leukemia, sickle cell disease, stem cell transplantation, and other areas of hematology research.

The Senate has already passed language that would delay implementation of this rule, but the House must act before the rule is scheduled to take effect.

📢 Now is the time to speak up. Contact your House Representative and urge them to support delaying implementation of this harmful rule and work toward a permanent solution to rescind it.

Meaningful progress in access to CAR-T will require not only continued scientific innovation, but also coordinated policy reform, regulatory collaboration, and sustained investment in modernizing the systems that ultimately determine who benefit from these transformative therapies.
