🎉 Exciting News for Allen College Occupational Therapy!

We are thrilled to announce that the Allen College Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD) program has been granted Preaccreditation Status by ACOTE®!

This important milestone reflects years of dedication, collaboration, and hard work by our occupational therapy faculty, administration, institutional partners, and supporters. It marks a significant step forward in bringing our vision for occupational therapy education to life and advancing the future of healthcare.

We are especially grateful to our current OTD students. As the pioneering cohort of the Allen College OTD program, their patience, resilience, professionalism, and trust in our vision have been instrumental in reaching this achievement.

While there is still work ahead on the journey toward full accreditation, we are proud of this accomplishment and excited about what lies ahead. Congratulations to our OT faculty, students, and everyone who helped make this milestone possible!

As part of our Occupational Therapy Practice with Children & Adolescent Populations course, we visited Cedar Valley Kids Daycare and spent time engaging with children in classrooms of various age groups. Through play, creativity, and connection, we were able to apply classroom concepts while learning more about child development and pediatric practice.

A huge thank you to Cedar Valley Kids, a UnityPoint partnering facility, for hosting us. We're excited for more opportunities to learn and grow together throughout the semester!

OTD students recently had the opportunity to learn from Tom Hoey, COTA, who brought a variety of equipment commonly found in skilled nursing and long-term care settings. Students explored wheelchair seating and positioning solutions, experienced the differences between various cushions, and practiced applying adaptive equipment to different wheelchair models.

Tom shared not only his extensive knowledge of seating and positioning but also the creativity, problem-solving, and hands-on skills often needed to make modifications that can significantly improve a person's comfort, safety, and quality of life. Students even had the chance to make manual wheelchair adjustments themselves, bringing classroom concepts to life.
