Zoo Technology at SUNY Jefferson

Zoo Technology at SUNY Jefferson JCC's Zoo Technology Program page for students, alumni, potential students and anyone else (maintained by faculty and students of JCC ZT).

Welcome to the SUNY Jefferson Zoo Technology / Animal Management page! The page is open to everyone who is interested in professional zookeeping or SUNY Jefferson Animal Management (Zoo Tech). It is a chance for me to give updates on the program and provide a forum where students, faculty, potential students, zoo staff mentors, and others can network with each other. Potential students: Many of o

ur graduates and current students are on the page. Feel free to ask them about the program! Let me know if you have specific questions and would like me to refer you to someone. AMG students & grads: if you have made a class page for yourselves, feel free to link it here. Graduates: There is a different closed FB page reserved for only you.

Today, The New York Times told the story of Zoo New York at Thompson Park!! Watch for the paper this weekend.

It went from one of the worst zoos in America to a beloved menagerie filled with disabled and elderly native species. Now it may close for good.

Happy National Zookeeper Week! Meet our lead zookeeper - Steve! 🐾

Steve has been with Zoo New York for quite some time, as he started working here after completing the Zoo Tech program at Jefferson Community College. His love for the animals shines through the care he provides and the presentations he delivers to the public. Here are some fun facts about Steve!

I love being a Zookeeper because: Zookeeping is one of the coolest jobs in the world. I get to care for animals in need, participate in their conservation and research, educate the public, and work outside. I'm thankful every day for the opportunity to make the world a better place.

My favorite animal at Zoo New York: Suzy the Snowy Owl! Snowy Owls are my absolute favorite animal. Few zookeepers get to work with their favorite animal, and even fewer get to experience a special connection with them. Suzy has an amazing personality and guests adore her. Sharing my experience and knowledge about Suzy with all of her fans is one of the greatest privileges of my life.

A fun fact I love to share: Wolverines are usually born around Valentine's Day, so many wolverines share the same birthday!

A favorite zoo memory: Performing an otter keeper chat during Boo at the Zoo while dressed up as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. 🐸

Thank you, Steve, for your many efforts to make Zoo New York a wonderful place to connect with wildlife.
