From a GED to a college degree and a career she’s proud of — this is Janessa’s story.

When Janessa Behnke started Lake Area Tech's Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) program in July 2025, she had one goal: earn her GED and create new opportunities for herself and her family.

While working toward her GED, Janessa connected with the South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation’s WIOA program, which helped her gain employment as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at a local nursing home.

Balancing full-time work, family and classes wasn’t always easy, but Janessa stayed committed. Just over six months after starting the program, she earned her GED.

And she didn’t stop there.

Janessa enrolled at Lake Area Tech in the Business/Human Resources program and is now in her second semester, continuing to work toward new career opportunities.

“𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗘𝗟 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗺𝘆 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀," 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗻𝗸𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗶𝗱.

This is what a story is all about — setting goals, creating opportunities and never stopping at what’s already been accomplished.

Congratulations to this year's Build Dakota scholars! 👏

These 618 scholars represent the future of South Dakota. When we invest in students, we create opportunity for them to succeed, and South Dakota grows right alongside them. I am grateful for T. Denny Sanford’s leadership and foresight to help launch this program. More than a decade later, we see that vision at work across our state. This year’s scholars are the next chapter of his remarkable legacy.

Every Lake Area Tech student has a story — a journey that brought them here, goals they're working toward, and a future they're building.

At our Fall 2026 Scholarship Luncheon, more than 200 scholarship recipients had the opportunity to meet the donors who are helping make those futures possible. For our students, it was a chance to put a face and a story to the generosity behind their scholarship. For our donors, it was an opportunity to see the difference their investment is making.

During the spring scholarship cycle, $349,412 in donor-funded scholarships were awarded to Lake Area Tech students, with the fall cycle closing at the end of October.

We were honored to welcome Nick Wendell, Executive Director of the South Dakota Board of Technical Education, as our featured speaker and to celebrate the stories, accomplishments, and possibilities represented in the room.

To all of our scholarship donors — thank you for believing in our students, investing in their journeys, and helping shape what comes next. Your generosity becomes part of their story today and helps build a brighter future for tomorrow.
