Erik Ronningen '64A, '66C was the first keynote speaker of the academic year for our Character Development Chapel Speaker Series.

Mr. Ronningen is known to be the last person to escape the South Tower of the World Trade Center alive before it collapsed on September 11th, 2001. He is the author of an award-winning book titled FROM THE INSIDE OUT: Harrowing Escapes from the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.

During his speech, Mr. Ronningen, who commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army Corps of Engineers after graduating from VFMC, talked about how his experience and lessons learned at The Forge helped him survive on that day.

"The experience you get here sets you up wonderfully well learning to be calm, quiet inside, balanced, so that you can think clearly what's the right thing to do."
