From the classroom to the Capitol 🏛️ Congratulations to second-year graduate student Jaida on representing WP at NJSHA’s Student Advocacy Day! Here's what she had to say about her experience:
Last week, I had the great honor of representing William Paterson University of New Jersey’s Speech-Language Pathology Graduate Program at New Jersey Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NJSHA)’s Student Advocacy Day in Trenton, NJ! During this experience, I had the opportunity to sit in on a council meeting, where I observed the legislative process in action, including bills being presented, discussed, and voted on by state senators. It was incredibly insightful to see how policy is developed and how it can directly impact the field of speech-language pathology.
I also had the pleasure of speaking with Senator John F. McKeon about key issues discussed during the meeting, as well as current and proposed legislation related to our field. I am grateful to have been selected for this experience, which deepened my understanding of how advocacy shapes clinical practice, and reinforced my commitment to staying informed and involved as a future speech-language pathologist!
