Department of Languages and Cultures at West Chester University The Department of Languages and Cultures was established at West Chester University in 1959, by Dr. Alfred Roberts (1923-2012).

Department of Languages and Cultures - West Chester University - Mitchell Hall 224 - West Chester, PA 19383 The Department of Languages and Cultures is a vital and active presence in the College of Arts and Humanities at West Chester University. The name of the department conveys the range of research and instruction that exists at the undergraduate and graduate levels and reflects the breadth and

nature of our activities. Languages taught include American Sign Language, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian and Spanish. We offer beginning and intermediate language courses in Classics, Deaf Studies, French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish, as well as courses in other languages. We offer minors in Classics, Deaf Studies, French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish, as well as interdisciplinary minors in Latin American and Latino/a Studies, Linguistics, and Russian Studies. Major concentrations and K-12 Certification are offered in French, German, Russian and Spanish. Our Master of Arts degree in Languages and Cultures offers concentrations in French, German, or Spanish (with optional K-12 Teacher Certification), and allows students to develop their language and critical cultural skills at the graduate level.

We are so proud of Dr. Amiruzzaman!

Faculty Spotlight: Meet Dr. Stefanie Amiruzzaman, ASL/Deaf Studies Coordinator and Assistant Professor in Languages and Cultures WCUPA at West Chester University!

Dr. Amiruzzaman teaches American Sign Language (ASL) and holds a Ph.D. in Evaluation and Measurement, an M.Ed. in Deaf Education and a B.A. in American Sign Language, all from Kent State University.

Before joining WCU, she taught ASL and Deaf culture courses at institutions including The University of Akron, Princeton University and Ball State University. She is also a certified member of the American Sign Language Teachers Association and is continuing an IRB-approved research project exploring AI and ChatGPT in the classroom.

Her recent accomplishments include receiving the 2025 Stephan M. Ryan Award from ASLTA and WCU’s 2025 Women’s Leadership Award, publishing Signs Are Everywhere Teacher’s Guide, and serving as Vice President of the Pennsylvania State Association of the Deaf.

We’re proud to spotlight Dr. Amiruzzaman and the teaching, research and leadership she brings to our WCU community.
