Dr. Antonia Novello made history in 1990 as the first woman and first Hispanic person to serve as U.S. Surgeon General.

Dr. Helen RodrĂ­guez-TrĂ­as shaped public health through decades of work in pediatrics, reproductive health and health equity and became the first Latina president of the American Public Health Association.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re celebrating the people whose work helped change healthcare far beyond the exam questions. 🙌

According to the CDC, 90% of the nation’s $5.3 trillion in annual healthcare expenditures are for people living with chronic and mental health conditions.

For healthcare students, that puts a lot of what you learn into perspective. Patient care isn’t only about what happens in an emergency. Prevention, ongoing support, communication, and helping people manage long-term conditions are huge parts of healthcare too. 🩺

The more you understand the “why” behind the numbers, the more classroom concepts start connecting to real-world care.
