Students!!!

Take a summer course that will not only fulfill school requirements, but will also fulfill you in meaningful, long lasting ways. Check out ‘Service-Learning Through Sport and Physical Activity’ and make a difference in your life and the lives of others. Learn new skills and emphasis the ones you already possess. See course summary below.

EKIN 3547/5518: Service-Learning Through Sport and Physical Activity
9:00-12:15 T/Th from May 29-July 6

This course will go beyond traditional scholarly lectures and discussions, and it will involve all class members in direct-action service and organizing activities in low-income communities. It will involve off-campus travel to Hartford where class members will be working, participating with community activists and neighborhood residents, and be supported by the collaborative energies of several community partners. One of the foundational goals of the course will be to channel the knowledge and resources that the class members create into projects that will improve the community and help residents. Students will be encouraged to use creativity, initiative, and leadership skills.

Contact Jennifer Bruening at [email protected] for questions about this course.

Please come tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 31 between 12-2 on the Uconn Hartford Campus to talk to Ben and Leah about Son-Rise.

We will be in the Art Gallery adjacent to the new student center (1st floor Undergraduate Building).
The official presentation will start at 12:45.

Food will be available!!!

Ben and Leah Korenstein, Co-Directors of Son-Rise for Noam will be coming to the Greater Hartford Campus to discuss their powerful, child centered, home-based program based on love and acceptance of a precious 4 year old boy with autism.

Ben and Leah will be coming to campus to talk more about the program and interview potential volunteers to complete their team of 10-12 volunteers. Son-Rise for Noam already has eight volunteers (three from UConn) and are looking for 2-4 more.

What is needed:

• Open minded individuals who love having fun and are looking for a once in a life time opportunity to love a child with autism by joining his world

Because of the tremendous opportunity for growth and rewarding experience both for Noam and the volunteer who will become part of a dedicated, creative and talented team of volunteers, a minimum commitment of 4-6 hours a week for six months is required. Volunteers will receive professional Son-Rise training.

Current volunteers have reported, "This is amazing!" "Noam is amazing" "I am so excited to see him smile" "This has changed my life", "I am a much happier person.", "I have learned how to let go" "I now am able to get up in the morning without being stressed out".

If this type of experience interests you, please come Tuesday, Jan. 31 between 12-2 on the Uconn Hartford Campus. To learn more about Son-Rise, visit our website http://www.noamsonrise.org/volunteer.html or contact Leah or Ben at 860-796-0183. We will be in the Art Gallery adjacent to the new student center.

We look forward to meeting you!

Join the Office of Service-Learning (OSL) to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in a way that this historic, dynamic man would be proud. It is without a doubt that we should learn and live by his example.

The OSL will be joining Hands on Hartford (http://www.handsonhartford.org/) for a day of service at Hartford’s very own Simpson-Waverly School. We will be cleaning up and painting the inside walls of the school making it a better learning environment for students, staff, teachers and visitors.

There is room for a few more students, so please grab your spot soon! Contact the OSL at [email protected] and we will register you for this service project and give you more information.

We will be meeting at the Simpson-Waverly School at 1:15 pm and service will continue until 4:30 pm on Monday, January 16th.

Learn more about Dr. King and his meaningful life and contributions here.
