"As a first-generation student and the first to go to college in my family, I feel that having my family’s last name on my degree means everything to me," Dora Crespo '26 shared in a Q&A with the Charger Blog leading up to Commencement.

"I’m beyond proud to represent the Latin community and to show that our stories, sacrifices, and dreams belong in every room we step into. But I’m also nervous about what the job field will look like; the pressure of being a first-generation student has been following me for the past few months.

"I’m nervous about letting down my family if I don’t find a job immediately," she continued. "I feel like there’s such a standard for college students to find a job and be successful right after graduation, but what success also means is allowing yourself time to breathe, to grow, to explore the world, and to discover the path that truly fulfills you. Maybe graduation isn’t just about having all the answers. Maybe it’s about having the courage to keep going, even when the future feels uncertain."

New Charger grad Jamesha Barrett ’26 MPH received a national public health research award at the 2026 Society for Public Health Education conference, where she presented research on addressing food insecurity among international graduate students.

"This conference represented not only an opportunity to learn from public health leaders across the country, but also a chance to reflect on how far I have grown personally, professionally, and academically throughout my time in the program," she wrote.

"I would encourage other students to take advantage of opportunities such as conferences whenever possible," Jamesha continued. "It can feel intimidating at first, but those spaces often become places where growth, learning, and unexpected opportunities happen. Being willing to ask questions, share your work, and engage in conversations can truly shape your future path in public health."

Heading into Commencement, we asked Eren Sarikaya ’26, a homeland security major, a few questions about his time spent here at the University of New Haven and his plans for the future. He wrote an expansive reflection on what graduating means to him and what he hopes to accomplish in the future.

"I am not leaving as the same person who first walked onto campus," he wrote. I am leaving with more maturity, more perspective, more discipline, and a much stronger sense of purpose. There were lessons I learned in the classroom, but there were also many lessons I learned outside of it through leadership, public service, internships, volunteer work, and life itself.

"All of that shaped me in ways that feel very personal. It shaped the way I think, the way I carry myself, the way I respond to pressure, and the way I see my responsibilities to others. Looking back now, I can honestly say that this journey changed me in ways I did not fully understand while I was living through it."

The University of New Haven marked a decade of hosting its Salute to Service event, bringing together student veterans, faculty, staff, and community members for an evening of recognizing service and remembering sacrifices made.

As guests sat within the room, a single table stood apart. “This table is set for one... symbolizing the fact that members of our profession of arms are missing from our midst,” Henry Wylie ’28, a VA work study student whose both parents are veterans themselves, explained.

Each element of the table told a story: the white cloth for purity, the red rose for loved ones, the candle for enduring spirit, and the inverted glass to represent those who could not return.

“We must never forget those who are still deployed, those who have never returned home, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice,” Wylie said.

New Charger grad Gabby Teel ’26, an exercise science major and member of the Chargers track and field team, joined Charger 360 recently to reflect on her decision to come to the University. “I came up here and fell in love.”

She discussed how she balanced her academic and athletic commitments as well as earning an NEC title in the triple jump this year after qualifying for the NCAA Division II National Championships last year.

She also shared how, as an introvert, she put an emphasis from the start of her time on campus to talking to everyone, building connections and getting involved on campus. “The people here are so welcoming.”
