Yale Civic Leadership Initiative

Yale Civic Leadership Initiative This initiative seeks to empower students to cultivate the values, system knowledge and skills to be prosocial and constructive leaders in their community.

Civic leadership is deteriorating in our society. In political and community institutions, and in the public impact of private actions we encounter over and over the consequences of this deficit: Grid Locked politics. Mistrust of Institutions. Self-dealing and corruption cloaked in the language of public interest. Cynicism about voting. Declining participation in politics and public affairs. This

initiative is intended to address this deficit. It emerges from the belief that Yale College graduates should be equipped and motivated to spark the renewal of civic voice, power and spirit in the United States and beyond. The Civic Leadership Initiative is by itself a manifestation of people power - even since the inception by Eric Liu and Dean Holloway and the first conference in 2015, a group of interested students has taken the lead and brought to fruition the second conference in coordination with Yale College and Citizen University. It is a joint-venture of the Yale administration and an on-going student movement. The summit will continue to sustain a cycle of student-led activity and learning that will continue to build until the next annual spring conference.

The Civic Leadership Conference in YaleNews!
"Last semester’s events, when discussions on race and inclusivity took over campus discourse, was “an important test,” [Holloway] said, and urged students to talk and listen to one another, even if they disagree.
“We can disagree on many, many things. In fact, we probably should; it’s healthy. But we need to identify and embrace the things we share we in common,” said Holloway."
