The Purdue University School of Engineering Education was honored to partner with the University of the Philippines Diliman College of Engineering (UPD COE) in delivering a faculty development workshop on Active Learning and Team-Based Learning from August 4–6, 2026.
Facilitated by Prof. Khairiyah Mohd Yusof and Syed Ahmad Helmi Syed Hassan, the three-day workshop brought together 35 faculty members to explore learner-focused approaches that promote student engagement, collaboration, and meaningful learning in engineering education.
The workshop was initiated by Maxell P. Lumbera, a PhD candidate in Purdue’s School of Engineering Education and Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at UPD, and organized by the UPD COE Office of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs with support from the Office of the Dean.
In her opening remarks, UPD COE Dean Maria Antonia Tanchuling emphasized the importance of continually evolving teaching practices to better serve today’s engineering students.
Throughout the workshop, participants engaged in collaborative learning activities, critical reflection, and discussion about teaching and learning in engineering. Faculty had opportunities to experience active and team-based learning firsthand, examine assumptions about teaching, explore evidence-based pedagogical practices, and consider how these approaches could be applied in their own courses.
During the closing session, participants reflected on new perspectives they had gained as educators and shared their enthusiasm for implementing active and team-based learning strategies more systematically and purposefully. Several described the workshop as transformative to their approach to teaching and expressed a renewed commitment to creating more engaging, inclusive, and meaningful learning experiences for their students.
