As we confront the February 24th second anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Human Rights Program at Purdue invites students, faculty, staff, and the community to a talk by Dr. Yaryna Borenko on “Human Rights Advocacy at War” to take place on Tuesday, February 27th at 4:30pm in Stanley Coulter 239. Dr. Borenko is here as a visiting scholar through Purdue’s outstanding Ukrainian Scholars Initiative sponsored by the Human Rights Program. Please join us as Dr. Borenko walks us through the possibilities and limitations of human rights advocacy within the wartime context.

Part-time faculty on strike at The New School university in New York City will stop receiving wages and premiums for health care benefits on Wednesday, three weeks into its strike.

Part-time faculty on strike are asking the university for affordable and reliable health insurance; pay that accounts for out-of-class work and inflation; job security; and recourse against discrimination and harassment, according to Huang.

The New School part-time faculty are on strike asking for higher wages and reliable health insurance. The strike is in its third week.

The strike is groundbreaking – the largest in the history of US higher education and part of a wave of organizing at college campuses across the country. It has brought together 48,000 graduate workers, academic researchers and postdoctoral scholars within the nine-campus University of California system who say the low wages they are paid make it impossible to live in the cities where they work. The most common salary for graduate workers is $23,247, according to the academic workers unions.

Our director Rebekah Klein-Pejšová invites us to her Human Rights class tomorrow! Special Talk on "Working as a Humanitarian", Wednesday, 30 November, 1:30pm WALC B091

Due to a great stroke of luck, Kevin White, a Humanitarian Aid worker with most recent experience on the border between Colombia and Venezuela and in Tigray, will be speaking with my History of Human Rights class tomorrow at 1:30pm in WALC B091 about Humanitarian work, including background, principles, activities, and his personal experiences. He agreed to open this up to a larger group. I know it is semester crunch time and everyone is busy, but this will be a valuable and rewarding opportunity. Please spread the word about it, and help me fill that really enormous cavernous space that is WALC B091!
