EAPS associate professor Ali Bramson recently shared her planetary science research as part of Purdue's Birck Seminar Series!

Her talk, "Unlocking the Geologic History of Planets using Thermal, Radio, and Microwave Frequency-Based Exploration of our Solar System," explored how scientists can use different wavelengths of energy to investigate what lies beneath planetary surfaces and better understand their geologic histories.

What can one enormous mountain tell us about the inside of a distant moon? 🪐

Purdue EAPS graduate student Mariana Blanco-Rojas, along with Mike Sori and I.F. Pamerleau, studied a mysterious 11-kilometer-tall peak on Oberon, one of Uranus’ moons!

Their modeling suggests the peak could be all that remains visible of a massive impact crater that slowly relaxed over time. If so, Oberon would have needed much more internal heat than expected, pointing to a convecting ice layer or even a subsurface ocean sometime in the moon’s past.

The research was published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets.
