🔴 Mapping Mars, one discovery at a time! What can the rocks surrounding an ancient Martian crater tell us about the planet's geological history?

Purdue University Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences PhD candidate Margaret Deahn and collaborators, including professor Briony Horgan, are helping answer that question.

In a new study published in Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets, the research team mapped the western rim of Jezero crater using observations from orbit. Their work connects the crater's geology to the surrounding region and provides valuable context for NASA's Perseverance rover as it explores the Martian landscape.

The research includes contributions from several current and former Purdue researchers, highlighting the university's continued involvement in planetary exploration.

James Haber, who earned his Ph.D. in planetary science at Purdue, is now a postdoctoral research fellow at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, where he studies Mars and its geologic history.

🎉 Congratulations to EAPS graduate student Ayobami Oladapo!
Ayobami has been selected as a 2026 Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant Graduate Scholar, receiving a $10,000 research award!
Her research focuses on how Indiana's groundwater aquifers respond to environmental changes, including seasonal drying, flash droughts and increased groundwater pumping. By analyzing groundwater measurements and natural chemical tracers, she hopes to better understand how water moves through these important underground systems.

Her findings will help inform a 3D groundwater flow model, providing valuable insight into the groundwater resources communities depend on.

Ayobami is one of nine graduate students selected from universities across Illinois and Indiana for this year's program. Congratulations, Ayobami! 🚂 We're so proud to have you in EAPS!

Through the Purdue 1 Indiana Essay Competition, Hoosier fifth graders are invited to write about how they could use a favorite school subject, hobby or skill to help a space mission crew succeed.
One winner from each of Indiana's 92 counties will receive a patch bearing their name. If mission conditions permit, winners' names will even travel to space aboard Purdue 1, the university's upcoming all-Boilermaker suborbital research spaceflight!
