Mortar Board at Purdue University

Mortar Board at Purdue University The Barbara Cook Chapter of Mortar Board at Purdue University. Est. 1926 The "Mortar Board" was first published in 1945 as the "Reminder Calendar."

Mortar Board, upon its founding at Syracuse University in 1918, became the first national organization honoring senior college women. In the Fall of 1926, the Purdue Chapter of Mortar Board was chartered and since that time has grown to preeminence in the national organization, which claims 191 college chapters. Mortar Board remained a society for senior women until 1975 when men were permitted to

be selected to its prestigious ranks. Mortar Board members are selected for their superior scholarship, dedicated service to the university community, and outstanding and constant leadership. Mortar Board can be found assisting special university leaders, holding a leadership conference, backing intercollegiate athletics, and honoring staff members who are especially supportive of students. The YWCA Women's Shelter, Community and Family Resource Center , the Liberal Arts Learning Center, Span Plan, and University Day have all benefited from Mortar Board's financial assistance. Over the past 63 years Mortar Board has given $911,000 in fellowships and awards to Purdue students, staff, and student organizations. The money for these fellowships and awards comes largely from the annual sales of the well-known calendar, appropriately named, the Mortar Board. Thanks to the sale of roughly 28,000 calendars this year, Mortar Board will once again be able to present fellowships and awards to Purdue students, staff, and student organizations. The Barbara Cook Chapter of Mortar Board is so named to honor retired Dean of Students Barbara Cook , who advised Mortar Board from 1956 to 1986. To honor Dean Cook, Mortar Board, along with friends and former students, donated a University marker which stands near the corner of Stadium and Northwestern Avenue.

As we approach the end of the school year, The Barbara Cook Chapter wants to take a moment and celebrate our amazing seniors from the Class of 2026! 🎉

Last week, they enjoyed a fantastic day together at the Centennial Celebration Baseball Game, soaking up lots of sunshine and fun. A few days later, was their official senior send-off in front of the Purdue Memorial Union.

Each of these incredible individuals has left a mark on our community, and while we will miss them dearly, we couldn’t be prouder as they prepare to graduate. Their futures are shining bright! ✨💛🖤

Purdue Mortar Board Meetings: Where Opportunities to Serve and Professional Development Meet! 🤝

Recently, we delved into two core pillars of Mortar Board, service and leadership, during our new member meetings!

In our first meeting, we crafted tie-blankets to donate to our local Department of Child Services. 🧶

A few weeks later, we had the privilege of hearing from Dr. Jay Akridge and Dr. Christine Wilson about how to create a leadership philosophy statement. 📝

These experiences allowed our members to grow together and truly embody the spirit of Mortar Board! 🌟

Introducing our final member spotlight and fearless leader: Lauren Kish!

Lauren is a senior majoring in Political Science and Sociology. In the future, she will be continuing her education at Indiana University Maurer School of Law! 👩‍⚖️📜

She says that a “campus must do” is going to Silver Dipper. 🍦

Our entire chapter is incredibly thankful for Lauren’s leadership, guidance, and expertise. She has consistently been a steady leader for our members, representing us exceptionally well on and off campus! 👏🏼
