Hi!!! Here’s a question for the high school Athletes…

Did you know that you need to register with NAIA & NCAA by the time you are a senior if you are planning on pursuing college athletics in either division??

You can wait until senior year, but the benefits of registering as a high school Freshman are so great! Continual eligibility checks help you to stay on track and create goals, allow you to plan ahead for courses you will need to take, and allow college coaches a format to align eligibility!

Your grades and the courses you take are so important! Every single high school year counts and you will need to show that you have the required GPA & courses completed ✔️

Seniors (AND Juniors)….

What does your Social Media say about you???

For many of us, we see social media as a way to stay connected with others. There are other ways people and organizations use social media that we may not think about when we post – they use it to help them make decisions. Some colleges, scholarship providers, and hiring managers are using social media to learn more about their applicants before making decisions. Therefore, it is very important to think before posting anything on social media.

Kaplan Test Prep recently published survey results about social media and college admissions. They surveyed approximately 400 college admissions officers and found that 40% visit applicant’s social media pages.

Below are some of the reasons decision makers may be looking at your social media posts:

- Social media accounts can distinguish applicants, especially at competitive colleges
- Identify and recruit talented students
- College has strict community living standards (no drinking, smoking, etc) and view social media to ensure students do not partake in these behaviors
- Colleges want students who fit the college image in regards to how they carry themselves publicly
- Curiosity
- Alerted by someone about inappropriate behavior on social media

I actually worked closely with a former dean of students from a large university. He would tell a story about an application process in which he was truly excited about the intern that he selected. However, he received an anonymous tip about their social media page and was floored and disgusted by what he saw. Needless to say, that student did not earn the internship role with their office.

As you start to review your social media accounts, ask yourself, “Do I want _______________ seeing this?” Frequently it is called the “Grandma test,” but maybe there is someone else you want to use as your moral compass. It could be your mom, dad, pastor, future employer, etc. Whoever it is, keep asking yourself that question as you review your profiles and posts. If there is something that doesn’t pass the test, don’t post it or delete the post. This also goes for photos that you have posted, as well as tagged photos.

In addition to reviewing your social media profiles you use regularly, Google yourself and see what comes up. Is there a social media profile you forgot you even had? Did someone tag you in a photo you did not even know was online? It’s always good to Google yourself on a regular basis to see what you find. If you have a common name, search your name along with things like your city, high school, activity, etc.

To be safe, avoid the following topics/photos on social media:

Drinking
Smoking
Drugs
S*x
Bad mouthing something/someone
Cursing
Violence
While the chance an admissions officer will see your social media is small, the chance is there. Scholarship providers and hiring managers may also be searching for you before they make their final decision. Your online identity can play a part in admissions, scholarships, or hiring decisions. Therefore, to be safe, make sure you are presenting your best self online.

Dear friends,

I am thrilled to welcome you to my website and to have the opportunity to share my story with you. My name is Jodie Walters and I have always had a strong passion for helping others. I value total health and wellness and my definition of that includes: physical, social, mental, ethical, emotional, & spiritual. I strongly believe that when one of these areas is not taken care of or struggling then all of the other areas will be affected. I carry these beliefs into my work with students. I want to know them as a “whole” person, not only their educational aspirations, but all of the other pieces to them! I find that to be extremely important in assisting a student in finding a college or trade school that they will be successful and happy at!

I began my journey at Indiana University in Bloomington where I earned a Bachelor of Applied Health Science in Human Development and Family Studies with minors in Psychology & Sociology. I worked as an Assistant Academic Advisor for the Athletic Department at Fullerton Junior College. This is when I decided to continue my education and I pursued a Masters Degree from IUPUI in School & Educational Counseling. Upon completion of this degree I worked as a High School Counselor and Volleyball Coach. Within my first counseling job I developed an even stronger desire to work with athletes pursuing college as well as an interest in the college admissions process. I accepted a job as the College and Career Counselor at a High School in a Chicago suburb with 3,000 students. At this school I had the most awesome opportunity to visit over 60 colleges, I built connections with Admissions Representatives, and really poured myself into learning about the college Admissions Process.

I have worked as a private practice college admissions advisor since 2011 and also have 6 years experience as a middle school counselor.

Not only do I have experience with college admissions, I have experience as a high school guidance counselor, and I have studied and worked with children and adolescents at every developmental stage of life. I am equipped to not only guide your student through an application process, but to get to know them as an individual in order to assist them in finding the right college fit. A place that will allow them to grow socially & academically as well as providing them with the opportunities they need to be successful in a future career.
