McDaniel College ROTC w/ MSMU and Hood College Welcome to the Official Green Terror Battalion page! Mary’s University in Emmitsburg and our affiliate Hood College in Frederick. Army.

The Green Terror Battalion Army ROTC program was established at the host school McDaniel College located in Westminster, Maryland in 1919 followed by the addition of our partner Mount St. In 1973 female Cadets were admitted to Army ROTC programs across the nation, and now comprise about 8 percent of the Green Terror Battalion. Although the Battalion is spread among three campuses there is a strong

camaraderie between the Cadets when they come together for classes as well as training events. The Army ROTC program is broken down in to two courses. The Basic Course consists of Military Science Year I (MSI) and Military Science Year II (MSII). In these courses, new Cadets experience a basic introduction to the U.S. Army that includes military customs and courtesy, military history, land navigation, fundamentals of leadership, and a brief introduction to troop leading procedures and operations orders. In the Advanced Course, Cadets focus on an application of leadership and small unit tactics during Military Science Year III (MSIII). They will also practice briefing operations orders, rotate through various leadership positions and prepare for their upcoming assessment course. In Military Science Year IV (MSIV) senior Cadets prepare to become Second Lieutenants as they fine-tune their leadership skills and learn battle analysis, staff operations and leadership counseling. Upon completion of the Advanced Course Cadets receive a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Cadets participate in classroom learning activities as well as training in the field. The Green Terror Battalion conducts physical training at the respective campuses every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday throughout each semester. Each month the Cadets come together to perform various labs such as rappelling, land navigation and other team building exercises. Once a semester the Cadets participate in a Field Training Exercise (FTX) where they will have hands-on opportunities to perform operations they initially learn within the classroom environment. To help ease the cost of education, the Army ROTC program offers the potential for various scholarship opportunities. Beginning in the summer prior to their senior year, high school students may apply for a National Scholarship in which they may be awarded a 4 year tuition-scholarship or a 3 year advanced designee scholarship. There are also Campus-Based Scholarships that may be offered to those Cadets who show great initiative in maintaining a high cumulative Grade Point Average, high level of physical fitness, as well as the motivation and drive to embed themselves in Cadet-life and training. These scholarships are highly competitive and not guaranteed just because an individual enrolls in the program. Cadets must work hard to earn these highly sought-after opportunities. When a Cadet formally contracts in to the Army ROTC program they make the commitment to serve their country upon their commissioning as a Second Lieutenant. As contracted Cadets move through the program there are various training courses in which they may be eligible to participate. Summer training opportunities include Airborne and Air Assault schools, Cadet Troop Leader Training (CTLT), Mountain Warfare School, and Cultural Understanding of Language Proficiency (CULP) a program through which Cadets travel to various countries.
