We’re grateful to the Wichita Medical Research and Education Foundation (WMREF) for its generous support of KansasCOM and our student doctors. Our partnership helps us continue building a stronger health care future for Kansas patients.

WMREF recently contributed $5,000 to sponsor our Sports Medicine and Research Symposiums and an additional $3,000 to advance student-led research through the Kansas Education and Research Network (KERN). These community-centered events advance medical practice and research right here in our city. Thanks to their investment, the first-place student research group at the Research Symposium received funding to continue its study.

Partnerships like this make a real difference! Thank you, WMREF, for being a vital part of our journey.

Have a big idea to improve community health? Kansas wants to hear from you. Applications are now open for the 2025 NXTSTAGE Community Health & Vibrancy Pilot Competition!
KansasCOM supports this global initiative, which connects innovators in tech with community partners to develop real-world solutions to improve health outcomes across Kansas.

Last year’s competition attracted 136 competitors from 31 states and 11 countries.
A select group of finalists will travel to Wichita to meet with local pilot partners from across the state. We’re excited to see bold ideas take root right here in Kansas.

There’s something special about seeing future physicians take their first real step toward their lifelong calling. We were honored to welcome the Class of 2029 at our Accepted Students Day, giving incoming students and their families a closer look at life at Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Participants toured classrooms, labs, and simulation spaces to see the technology and resources that support education. Student clubs set up booths to showcase the many ways to get involved and find community beyond the classroom.

A special thank you to our student ambassadors, who shared their personal insights and experiences from what surprised them most about medical school to the habits that helped them succeed.

We’re so excited to see what the next class will bring to our campus!

At our Scholarship Luncheon, we honored the generous donors helping to shape the future of medicine. This year’s recognized benefactors included the Wichita Eye Foundation, Riverside Health Foundation, Kansas Osteopathic Medical Service program, the Dr. Michael Horowitz & Dr. Jeannie Gutierrez scholarship, and the President’s and Dean’s awards.

We had the privilege of hosting Kansas Representative Angela Martinez, an advocate for state-supported programs such as the Kansas Osteopathic Medical Service Scholarship in addressing the physician shortage in our communities.

Two student doctors shared how their scholarships are helping them along their paths to becoming DOs; with the average medical student debt exceeding $250,000, this support is life changing.

We had a great time sponsoring an opening weekend Wind Surge game! Our Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow group showed up in full force, filling a section with students, friends, and family members to cheer on the home team.

We had student involvement throughout the night, with third-year student Chase Hearn throwing a first pitch and a group of first- and second-year students taking the field for the Dizzy Bat game between innings. Fans also stopped by our booth to spin our prize wheel and take-home Wind Surge and KansasCOM giveaways.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for a fun night! We’re grateful for the chance to support our students and celebrate the community we’re building together. And to top it all off, the Wind Surge brought home the win.

Guests met with student doctors from our Student Association of Military Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (SAMOPS) and military faculty members, discussing careers in military medicine. During the visit, they explored our HoloAnatomy tools, which allow small groups to study anatomy together in an interactive virtual environment.

We are proud to support students serving in the military, including those receiving support from the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP). Military students lead with courage, learn with intention, and serve with heart, and we are honored to be part of their journey.

Thank you to our McConnell AFB partners. We are grateful for your service and for your enthusiasm to show our students what it means to lead in uniform.

Our student doctors teamed up with League 42 for DO Day of Service, bringing health education to the Leslie Rudd Learning Center through a morning of fun activities. With the baseball season now underway, the Batter's Box with Student Docs event also gave young athletes a chance to get game-day ready. Guests walked away with a deeper appreciation for the human body, thanks to CPR demonstrations, anatomy models, sports medicine challenges, and games.

At KansasCOM, community service is core to our values. Connecting with the community brings our university's mission to life as we lead with purpose to support the health and well-being of those around us. Youth-oriented events like these also help to plant the seed for future physicians by showing young Wichitans what medicine looks like up close.

We extend a big thank you to League 42, Wichita Children’s Home, and Heartland Dermatology for joining us to make this day a success.

From day one, our mission has been to train doctors who are not just skilled but deeply empathetic and understanding of the whole patient.

As an osteopathic medical school, we teach a patient-centered approach that considers the mind, body, and spirit in healing. Osteopathic physicians (DOs) are trained to look beyond symptoms, recognizing how social determinants of health such as housing, nutrition, and transportation affect a person’s well-being. This mindset makes DOs particularly well-suited to meet Kansas’ need for primary care physicians.

Together, we are building healthier outcomes for the medically underserved. With your donation you can:

• Empower Future Physicians – By supporting the Student Doctor Success Fund, you ensure students have the tools they need to make a difference.
• Strengthen Patient Care – A strong physician pipeline means better health care access, especially in rural and historically underserved areas.
• Augment Medical Education – Every gift fuels innovation in training and technology.

A group of our osteopathic medical students visited the Kansas State Capitol, representing KansasCOM and our mission to train the physicians of the future. Bringing doughnuts, coffee, and a shared dedication to patient care, they met with legislators and discussed their research that highlights the impact of osteopathic medicine in Kansas. Afterward, the student doctors attended House and committee proceedings, followed by special recognition in the Senate.

The trip to Topeka emphasized our mission to bring more doctors to underserved populations across the state. An unplanned encounter with Lt. Gov. David Toland allowed students to hear firsthand advice from him. He mentioned the importance of finding purpose in one's career and encouraged the future physicians to consider the quality of life available in smaller communities—places rich in friendship, family, and opportunity.

It was a privilege to connect, share ideas, and advocate for health care in Kansas.
