Wilberforce University

Wilberforce University Suo Marte! Welcome to the Official page for Wilberforce University, Home of the Bulldogs!

Founded in 1856, Wilberforce University can trace its origin to a period of history before the Civil War, when the Ohio Underground Railroad was established as a means of escape for all those blacks who sought their freedom in the North from the yoke of slavery, one of the destination points of this railroad became Wilberforce University. As the Underground Railroad provided a route from physical

bondage, the University was formed to provide an intellectual Mecca and refuge from slavery’s first rule: ignorance. Wilberforce University, the nation’s oldest private, historically black university, was named to honor the great 18th century abolitionist, William Wilberforce.

🌟 Wilberforce Legacy Spotlight 🌟

Did you know that one of the most fascinating global scholars connected to Wilberforce University was economist and educator Milton S. J. Wright?

A 1926 Wilberforce graduate, Wright went on to study internationally and became known as the only known person of African descent to have a face-to-face conversation with Adolf Hi**er before World War II. His life’s journey reflected the bold intellectual spirit, global influence, and resilience that have long defined Wilberforce alumni.

After earning advanced degrees and studying abroad, Wright returned to Wilberforce, where he spent decades serving students as a professor, administrator, and Vice President for Research—helping shape generations of scholars and leaders.

From pioneers in education and science to artists, activists, inventors, and public servants, Wilberforce alumni continue to leave an impact across the world.

🏠💚 Wilberforce University Continues Expanding Student Housing Solutions 💚🏠

As Wilberforce University continues experiencing enrollment growth and increased student demand, the University remains fully committed to ensuring safe, comfortable, and student-centered housing accommodations for our Bulldogs.

To address national housing challenges impacting many colleges and universities, Wilberforce has implemented a comprehensive housing strategy designed to support both current and future student needs.

Modular residence halls will provide additional high-quality temporary housing solutions featuring:
✔ 24-48 dorm rooms (As needed)
✔ Shared kitchens, lounges, laundry facilities, showers, and restrooms
✔ Modern safety systems including sprinklers and smoke detectors
✔ IT infrastructure and student support spaces

In addition to these modular residence halls, students will continue to be housed across:
🏫 Existing campus residence halls
🏫 Two new residence halls scheduled to open this fall with capacity for approximately 72 students (36 each)
🏫 Partner housing arrangements with Antioch College and Payne Theological Seminary

It is also important to note that approximately 40% of Wilberforce students are non-traditional students—including online graduate students and RISE students—who do not reside on campus.

Wilberforce University continues working proactively and strategically to meet the evolving needs of our growing student population while prioritizing safety, student experience, and long-term campus development.

The Force is growing—and so is the vision for the future. 💛💚
