This is an exciting and important announcement for our greater community here. You are strongly encouraged to attend this timely event!
Wilkes WGS along with the League of Women Voters of the Wilkes-Barre Area, the Peace and Justice Center of Northeastern PA, the McGowan Center for Ethics and Social Responsibility, and the Luzerne County Historical Society is sponsoring a contactless event to commemorate the signing of the 19th ammedament.
A live lecture will take place on Monday, September 21st at 7pm via zoom to commemorate the signing of the 19th amendment. This also conveniently falls right after constitution day! It will be an interactive conversation between Dr. Susan Poulson, Professor of History at The University of Scranton, author of Suffrage: The Epic Struggle for Women's Right to Vote, and Dr. Teri Finneman, Associate Professor of Journalism at the University of Kansas, and author of Press Portrayals of Women Politicians: 1870s to 2000s. The talk is being spearheaded by the League of Women Voters of the Wilkes-Barre Area, the Peace and Justice Center of Northeastern PA, the McGowan Center for Ethics and Social Responsibility, and Luzerne County Historical Society. Wilkes WGS is also a co-sponsor.
Following the conversation, there will be a segment promoting voter registration and giving guidance on absentee ballots and voting by mail. This may be especially beneficial for our students. There will then be a moderated question and answer period. The event will wrap up with a short video from the Luzerne County Historical Society, inviting attendees to a virtual tour of the exhibit on women’s suffrage at the Society’s gallery in Wilkes-Barre.
