William & Mary’s Ethics Club recently won the 30th Annual Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl. In the final round, the team analyzed a case on medical assistance in dying (MAID) and mental illness, an issue currently under debate in Canada. The case asked what safeguards are necessary for MAID to be ethically permissible in these circumstances.

Club president Bernardo Jimenez ’26 explained that the team focused on conditions such as meaningful consent, long-term and severe suffering, and the exhaustion of available treatments. He also emphasized the need for caution given the irreversible nature of MAID. Engagement with opposing teams also surfaced concerns about whether certain mental illnesses may impair an individual’s ability to consent, as well as the practical challenges of implementing safeguards in medical settings.

The team prepared through frequent, in-depth practice sessions, examining cases from multiple angles. Bernardo noted that the club’s interdisciplinary makeup strengthened their analysis by combining ethical reasoning with real-world knowledge. As the club continues to grow, its work underscores the importance of thoughtful, interdisciplinary analyses in addressing some of today’s most challenging health policy issues.
