Yesterday was truly a special and humbling experience as I had the honor of being recognized at the Emergency Health Services Federation (EHSF) Awards Ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda in Harrisburg.

Being acknowledged for 25+ years in EMS is something I’m incredibly grateful for—but even more meaningful was standing alongside so many dedicated EMS providers who have spent their lives serving others. It was humbling to be among such an inspiring group of professionals who share the same passion for caring, responding, and making a difference in our communities.

Our region is fortunate to have such a strong EMS system built on commitment, compassion, and teamwork. I’m proud to be a part of it and thankful for everyone who has been part of this journey along the way.

Here’s to continuing to serve and support our communities.

OxyHemoglobin Dissociation Curve
The OxyHemoglobin Dissociation Curve depicts the association between available oxygen (Pa02) and the amount of oxygen carried by hemoglobin (SaO2).
The OxyHemoglobin Dissociation Curve depicts the relationship between available oxygen (PaO2) and the amount of oxygen carried by hemoglobin (SaO2). This curve shows us the importance of preoxygenation and apneic oxygenation. By having an oxygen saturation of 90% or less, patients will desaturate more quickly than if oxygen saturation was >93%.

The OxyHemoglobin Dissociation Curve can shift either left or right for several reasons.
A left shift signifies an increased affinity to oxygen (less oxygen available to the tissues). A right shift represents a decreased affinity to oxygen (more oxygen available for the tissues).

LEFT SHIFT👈:
⬆️Increased affinity for oxygen (Less willing to give up oxygen)
⬆️Increased pH
⬇️Decreased pCO2
⬇️Decreased temperature
⬇️Decreased H+
⬇️Decreased 2-3DPG
CO
Methhomglobinema
Stored Blood 🩸
Fetal hemoglobin

RIGHT SHIFT👉
⬇️Decreased affinity for oxygen (More willing to give up oxygen)
⬇️Decreased pH
⬆️Increased pCO2
⬆️Increased H+
⬆️Increased Temperature
⬆️Increased 2-3DPG
🤰Pregnancy (oxygen to the fetus)

What is 2-3DPG 🤓
2,3 DPG(Diphosphoglycerate) is an enzyme that attaches to hemoglobin AFTER it drops off oxygen. It stabilizes the hemoglobin in its tense (desaturated) state so that it does not saturate with oxygen in the periphery, while it’s on the way back to the lungs with CO2 attached to its subunits.
