Eastern Sophomore of English Cushaiah Barnes is a critical reader as well as someone notably well-versed in close, insightful literary analysis. These skills were certainly utilized in a recent essay of hers, in which she carefully breaks down themes of speciesism, nature, and humanity in the twelfth century lai, “Bisclavret”.

Julia Trainor gets published! 📒

Featured in the Spring 2026 COPLAC (Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges) Journal: Metamorphosis, she published her senior research titled: Broken Mirrors: Defining the Three Types of Memories in Dystopian Literature.

Abstract: “This study focuses on the three types of memory found across dystopian literature from the twentieth century forward: Historical memory is formed around collective cultural experiences and past events. Virtual memory focuses on the use of technology to archive lived experience. Personal memory stems from the individuals’ experience. Drawing on texts ranging from Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s Herland (1915) to recent novels such as The Circle (2013) by Dave Eggers, I argue that in dystopian texts the role of memory has shifted over time: in older works the dystopian regimes attempt to erase memory; in newer works, to replace it. Although there has been plenty of research regarding dystopian literature throughout the years, scholarship has centered on limning the characteristics of the genre and applying feminist theory. Directing attention to memory within these texts allows us to appreciate the intertextual relationship between novels past, present, and future. Reading these texts in tandem can inspire us to consider how these fictional societies mirror our own.“

LINK IN BIO!

When the Eastern community raises $3,000 across English funds and scholarships, a $2,500 challenge gift from the Kalbers will support the Barbara C. Daring Endowed Scholarship, helping expand opportunities for students.

Eastern’s English Department fosters creative thinking and analytical skills, empowering students to apply these abilities across writing, digital media, and real-world contexts.

Through coursework in composition, literary studies, creative writing, and linguistics, students build strong communication skills and explore career paths in fields like law, teaching, and publishing.

Gifts in support of English help expand scholarship access and create opportunities for students to develop their voice, strengthen their skills, and prepare for a wide range of careers.
