Research biologist and UNCW alum, Dr. Byron Toothman will speak at the Water Quality for Fisheries Symposium in January 2027.
Toothman is the Southern Sites Research Lead for the North Carolina Coastal Reserve. He co-leads the System Wide Monitoring Program (SWMP) in southeastern NC and works with researchers, educators, and coastal resource managers to take advantage of natural and scientific resources provided by the Coastal Reserve. 😃

Byron Toothman is a research biologist and Southern Sites Research Lead for the North Carolina Coastal Reserve. He co-leads the System Wide Monitoring Program (SWMP) in southeastern NC and works with researchers, educators, and coastal resource managers to take advantage of natural and scientific resources provided by the Coastal Reserve.
His research uses interdisciplinary methods to study coastal aquatic ecosystems and understand how natural and anthropogenic disturbance affects biogeochemical cycling and ecosystem services. His work on Gracilaria vermiculophylla investigates ways that nuisance and invasive macroalgal blooms alter marsh geomorphology and the microbial cycling of toxic substances, with findings featured on NPR’s Weekend Edition.
Byron is a member of the Cape Fear River Watch Board of Directors where he currently serves as president, as well as a member of the New Hanover County Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors.
