UPDATE FROM THE GREENHOUSE:
The Titan Arum "Jinx" is near the end of the bloom cycle; accordingly, the SC Greenhouse will NOT be open on Tuesday, June 16. The YouTube livestream will remain on through mid-morning tomorrow.

We're still totalling up Jinx's visitors over the course of the week, but more than 1500 of you stopped by just today! Additionally, we've had nearly 40,000 views on the live stream. Thanks for joining us on this exciting botanical journey.

The Southwestern Greenhouse’s Amorphophallus Titanium “Corpse Flower” bloom is officially underway!

Max and Bryon, SC Greenhouse Supervisors, have named this plant "JINX" after our unofficial mascot – and, perhaps, as a nod to the initial dark coloration of the spadix.

Come see/smell it on campus Monday from 9am-5pm. The bloom is fading fast, so if you want to see it, today is your best chance!

Dr. Max Thompson, professor of biology and greenhouse supervisor at Southwestern College, has announced that a rare event will occur on campus this week. An Amorphophallus titanium, known as the titan arum or co**se flower, will bloom. Based on the plant's rapid growth in recent days, it is anticipated to bloom on Wednesday, June 10.

The flower typically opens in mid-afternoon and stays open all night, emitting the foul stench to attract flies and beetles to pollinate it. The spadix or center part of the flower only lasts about 24 hours.

Avery Riedel, Augusta, and Joseph Kasongo, Lubumbashi, D.R. Congo, received the Fran Jabara Award at Southwestern College Commencement exercises Sunday, May 10.

“We honor these two Moundbuilders who have demonstrated the spirit of leadership during their time as students, exemplified in the life of the man who instituted this award. Two students who have truly been leaders during their college years, who have made our campus stronger through their presence, and we know will serve the communities they call home with dedication and grace,” said Southwestern College President Liz Frombgen.
