The Greenheart Gardens Club is a group of students' parents in Ouachita parish who meet monthly. They learn about the same nutrition topics that their children learn in the nutrition classes taught during their science hour! This is done with the hopes that both adult and youth will adopt healthier eating habits.

Participants photographed are comparing the fat in whole milk and skim milk. Using a “Loss of Bone” model, they can compare the difference between a healthy bone and one that is osteoporotic. They are also offered a tasting of a healthy recipe and given colorful fact sheets to take home to help reinforce the message learned in class.

Ouachita Parish FCS SNAP-Ed Agent, Cathy Agan, has been presenting a series of lessons with Kindergarten students at Kiroli Elementary School. At their last lesson, the kids learned about fruits and vegetables and the parts of a plant they can eat.

The kids had fun building their own plant with plant parts like seeds, roots, stems, flowers, and leaves. They then got to eat their plants and gave the vegetables a thumbs up! One child said she was going to ask her mom to buy all of those vegetables for her to eat at home. Another said he didn’t even know that he likes vegetables.

LSU AgCenter Area Horticulturist Kerry Heafner attended the official grand opening and ribbon cutting of The Gardens of Somerset by P. Allen Smith on Tuesday, March 21st. P. Allen Smith, an internationally recognized gardening and lifestyle icon, was present for the ceremony. A butterfly release took place prior to the formal ribbon cutting. During his brief remarks, Smith recognized Heafner, the Northeast Louisiana Master Gardeners, and the Ouachita Parish 4-H Club for their involvement in both the community and at the facility. The Gardens of Somerset is an 18-acre, multigenerational retirement facility that offers both independent and assisted living facilities, as well as a lifestyle focusing on gardening, the culinary arts, and family.

In addition, the locally produced television program Louisiana Living broadcast live from The Gardens of Somerset immediately following the ribbon cutting ceremony. Heafner did his weekly lawn and garden segment, called In The Garden, live with host Ashley Doughty immediately after the ceremony. Heafner gave information on establishing new lawns in northern Louisiana, which early spring is the perfect time to do. Fellowship and refreshments prepared by Executive Chef Randy May were enjoyed after the ceremony and broadcast.

The East Carroll Parish 4-H Program partnered with the East Carroll Parish School Board and Jobs for America’s Graduates Program (JAG), a state-based national non-profit organization dedicated to supporting young people who face significant challenges to help them reach economic and academic success whose mission is to empower young people with the skills and support to succeed in education, employment, and life. Introductory entrepreneurship and business pitch lessons were taught to 56 students at Griffin Middle Academy. After presenting the lessons, students were offered the opportunity to participate in the 4-H Entrepreneur Pitch Contest. The youth created prototypes, flyers, and business plans. The final event was a pitch contest judged by local entrepreneurs and was attended by teachers, principals, and the school board president. This program taught teamwork, leadership, how to speak in public, how to prepare an effective presentation, and many more life skills.
