This year, Denim Day will be on April 30th, the same day as Take Back the Night! We encourage you to join us at the gazebo next week wearing your denim and participating in our denim day art project.
Since 1999, Peace Over Violence has run their Denim Day Campaign on the last Wednesday in April.
The campaign came from a 1992 r**e conviction in Italy. A ra**st appealed his conviction claiming the s*x was consenual and the Italian Supreme Court justices agreed. They claimed that since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she had to have helped her ra**st remove her jeans, therefore implying consent.
The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in protest and in solidaroty with the victim.
This was picked up by internatinal media, and that's where Patricia Giggans, the founder of Peace Over Violence, got the idea to encourage people to wear denim to protest victim blaming and myths around s*xual violence.
Join us at Take Back the Night this Denim Day to continue to stand in solidarity with survivors!
