Full Sail - Audio Engineering Techniques

Full Sail - Audio Engineering Techniques APT's page is the place to stay in contact with your fellow students and your Course Director. Got Questions, post them.. Want to say hello, do it

Course Objectives:
Students will learn how to “comp” lead vocals from several tracks, layer, blend and balance background vocals, edit them through numerous techniques and finally apply advanced modes like elastic time and pitch. Besides vocals, students will edit live drum tracks and apply techniques like sample accurate replacement, and quantizing audio. Once the editing part is done, student

s will learn how to import audio files and place them through spot mode, key-gate a synth part and combine several sessions into one master session through session data import. After all the editing and setting up, the students will learn the basics of mixing in the digital environment, current styles and techniques and how specific plug-ins work. Additional skills will be the to identify musical elements and nuances, manage milestones and roadblocks, balance levels and frequencies and how to create depth in a mix. While learning about proper monitoring techniques and setting up their studio rooms, the students will learn about listening in multiple environments, and what proper listening levels are. The final steps will be to explore the functions and learn basic setups of gain structure, distortion and harmonics, equalization, dynamic and time Based processing, panning and finally, dealing with phase issues. Applying all these techniques, the students will mix a session, pre-master the final mix and submit the required stems and mixes to a client.

Attention Drummers!

We’re in urgent need of a talented drummer for an exciting student project. We have two lab sessions next Monday, August 5th:

Lab 1: 11 am - 3 pm
Lab 2: 3 pm - 7 pm
During each session, we’ll be recording drums for a student’s song. The music is fantastic, and the vocalist has an amazing voice. The studio is equipped with a great drum set, including a DW snare, and you’re welcome to bring any additional hardware you prefer.

While we can’t offer a fee, we’ll cover your gas and provide some food as a token of our appreciation.

If you’re willing to donate your time and talent, please DM me as soon as possible. Your support means the world to the student and staff!

Please note: Once you commit, your presence is crucial. Without a drummer, the students will miss out on their lab experience.

Thank you in advance for your generosity and dedication!

That

I feel so sad about Spotify CEO Daniel Ek saying the cost of creating “content” is close to zero…For multiple reasons

(There’s many types of creators on Spotify, but I’ll speak as a songwriter & artist bc that’s what I know. And I’ll focus on the cost of creating songs as that’s the “content” I put on Spotify -we can talk another day about the cost of everything else😂)

Ok, here we go.

Firstly, Daniel’s comment implies that making content is my goal

It is not.

Creating work that fully expresses my voice, sharing it with people to (hopefully) have a positive impact, paying my bills & having enough for retirement is my goal. “Content” is one vehicle to (maybe) help me get there

Me creating “content” is DANIEL’S goal for me so that his business remains viable

Which brings me to my second point:

“close to zero” is simply not true.

My album DEAR JOHN cost around $20,000 to make. It took three months.

(btw time IS money bc time I spend creating is time I can’t work to earn real life cash)

But it’s not just about time & money for each “piece of content”

I wrote my first song at 14. I’m now 40. I’ve been fine tuning my songwriting, arranging, production & performance skills for 26 years - all at my own cost

So DEAR JOHN (recorded in 2020 & my best work, if using the above goal of positive impact) actually took me 23 years to make

Imagine not paying a CEO, with 23 years experience, fairly for his work 🙄

I love that my music is globally accessible and, right now, if I take it off Spotify I cut off my nose to spite my face

I want to create & share my work and I’m even happy to do it on a budget

(This morning I shot a film clip in my neighbours bathroom. My partner filmed it for free & I spent $24 on red lipstick. That’s “close to zero” for you)

But -whether it’s time or money- making songs costs. And making videos to promote those songs (& actually get them streamed) costs too

So if one platform provides all the worlds music to most of the worlds people, and the musicians themselves are required to work harder and harder to get that music heard, while earning less and less - well, that’s not a business model to be celebrated. That’s exploitation.

There is a certain “Angst” in the music community as creators are worrying about artists and companies using A.I. to create their tracks , specifically, in license, TV, commercial and background music
Udio is a@ prime example, as demonstrated by Zachary Cook today, capable of producing fully produced music, with lyrics and vocalist and in almost any genre.

Hearing the result of just a few prompts sounding as good as it does, and independent artists embracing it, what is going to happen to this large side hustle of license music and are young singers okay using AI created tracks, eliminating or reducing another income stream for music creators?

THIS WEEKS DOLBY ATMOS FEATURE:

I was actually trying to hear the original "So" Album from Peter Gabriel in Atmos, but no such luck.
While I might not be a connoisseur for Peter Gabriel's overall musical design, his production and especially his mixes have always been on my reference list. I believe many engineers felt that "So" was and is on their top 10.

This one is just gorgeous from his new Album 'I\O" from 2023, fully Atmos and I gotta tell you, ITS BIG in Atmos. After intro and verse, it adds an incredible string arrangement which is wide and surrounds you, but what really blows my mind is the piano right from the start. It feels like they recorded it with a surround mic in ambisonic and you are inside of it... almost creepy.

SSL Alpha link SX Madi died today!!! 20 plus years of being the heart of my studio.

I think it was jinxed talking about it with a friend today lol.

Its power supply died once before and I was able to fix it myself, but that was many years ago and I can not seem to find any parts for it.

Decision time.

I'm going to start a series of posts about good mixes in Dolby Atmos ( Spatial Audio) on Apple Music

I don't listen enough to classical music, but when I heard this, it felt like something that needs to be shared.

Matt Davis Check this one out.
