The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science recognizes graduates who have distinguished themselves in their majors. These awards are given at the discretion of faculty to graduating seniors especially deserving of recognition. The MCS departmental awards were given to 5 students at the Awards Convocation on April 29, 2026.

Lucy Cunliffe, mathematics major student, received the Chancellor’s Medal for Excellence in Undergraduate Research at UVA Wise at the Awards Convocation on April 29, 2026. Dr. Yasasya Batugedara Mohottalalage, her mentor (Assistant Professor of Applied Mathematics) and MCS department are very proud of Lucy's accomplishments.

Mathematics and Computer Science department celebrated beloved faculty member Ms. Jennifer Wilson's much deserved retirement today with a small gathering. Several faculty members and some former students were present and they shared their treasured moments and precious memories with Ms. Wilson over the 30 plus years of her teaching career. We were excited to have her family members join us, especially her mother and son. The department will miss her very much but is hopeful that she will visit us often and continue to share her knowledge and wisdom. Congratulations, Ms. Jennifer Wilson!

UVA Wise Student Lucy Cunliffe Named Inaugural Stallard Fellow in STEM. Cunliffe, an international student from England and a member of the UVA Wise tennis team, is pursuing a mathematics major with minors in exercise science and philosophy and concentration in data science. She plans to attend graduate school to earn a master’s degree and Ph.D. in mathematics, with the goal of becoming a college professor and researcher. MCS department is proud of Lucy and her accomplishments.

Lucy Cunliffe, Abiela Wang, and Carly Quillen successfully completed the Teacher Explorer Program of Spring 2025 semester.
The Teacher Explorer Program gives UVA-Wise students the opportunity to “explore” what it is like to teach a math class. The student sits in on a, typically lower level, math course here at UVA-Wise, then prepares a lesson plan and teaches a section of material from that course. This is all done under the careful mentorship of the Instructor of that class.

CEEI, The Center for Educational Excellence and Innovation offers one award annually for exceptional faculty mentoring at UVA Wise. Chosen annually by the new faculty, this mentor serves as a first friend and model of the collegial academic life. Wendy Martin is the winner of the 2024-2025 Mentor of the Year Award.

Recently, the Bill Gatton Foundation has gifted the College $11.2 million to establish funds to support multiple key initiatives at UVA Wise. The Foundation’s investment will create six endowed funds and support. One of them is the Rachel Clay-Keohane Mathematics Fund to honor the former star basketball player and head coach of the UVA Wise women’s basketball team, member of the UVA Wise Hall of Fame, and long-time faculty with the UVA Wise Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.

On Monday October 28, 2024, the University of Virginia’s College at Wise hosted its annual STEM-H – science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and health – Day. Some of our department faculty and students participated in the event.

UVA Wise celebrated earning the second consecutive Apple Distinguished School designation on October 25, 2024. Two of MCS department math faculty members were recognized for their innovative and effective use of iPad.
