The University of Virginia’s College at Wise is a public, four-year residential liberal arts college located in the lush mountains of Southwest Virginia and is the only division of the University of Virginia located outside of Charlottesville. As a COPLAC member institution, UVA Wise is nationally-accredited and has been nationally-ranked among top public liberal art colleges in the U.S. UVA Wise

is home to 2,000+ students and offers 34 majors, 39 minors, and eight pre-professional programs. As a member of the NCAA Division II and South Atlantic Conference, the UVA Wise Highland Cavaliers compete in 13 varsity sports.

Discovery happens when faculty and students work side by side.

UVA Wise researchers partnered with George Mason University on a study of cyanobacteria in the Shenandoah River, contributing to findings that included the identification of a species new to science.

Through hands-on research opportunities, Cavs continue to make meaningful contributions to scientific discovery. 🔬🌿

Most kids dread waking up early for school. Mornings are often filled with sleepy eyes, hurried breakfasts and the dreaded shuffle to the bus or car.

Friday mornings, however, are a different story.

Throughout much of the school year, Fridays at Wise Primary School have carried a different kind of energy. Before the first bell, UVA Wise student-athletes line the sidewalks with smiles and outstretched hands as students make their way inside, turning an ordinary arrival into something they look forward to each week.

On the final Friday of their school year, it feels especially fitting to look back on the smiles, laughter and excitement that “Fist Bump Friday” has brought to Wise Primary School, and we are already looking forward to its return next school year!

Music, creativity and craftsmanship will come together this June during a free weeklong Cigar Box Guitar Workshop hosted at UVA Wise. Participants will learn how to transform everyday materials into unique handmade musical instruments while exploring the rich history and culture of cigar box guitars.

The workshop is open to individuals ages 14 and older and will meet nightly from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., June 9–13, in Room 214 of the Gilliam Center for the Arts at UVA Wise.

The workshop is free to attend. All materials are provided through the “Art in Wise” grant funded by the University of Virginia’s Jefferson Trust Flash Grant Program.

The energy inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center at UVA Wise was unmistakable Thursday as community leaders, business owners, educators and residents packed the house for the annual SWVA Economic Forum. The crowd gathered not only to discuss the future of Southwest Virginia, but also to welcome keynote speaker Abigail D. Spanberger, making her first-ever visit to the College as Virginia’s governor.

Throughout the day, attendees filled every available seat as conversations continued around innovation, tourism, housing and the future of Southwest Virginia. Other speakers included Vijay Srinivasan, President of U.S. Commercial and State Government Operations at CGI, and Amanda Weinstein, Ph.D., Director of Research at the Center on Rural Innovation.
