The OSU Vegetable Production Systems Laboratory

The OSU Vegetable Production Systems Laboratory We work on a systems basis to strengthen vegetable farms and businesses, to aid peers and to increase product value to end-users and consumers.

We listen to farmers, scientists, and other stakeholders and partners to identify issues which can be addressed through enhanced combinations of crop genetics and cultural management. We document the performance of these combinations in a range of conditions and using scientific methods and many criteria. Those with whom we choose the subject of our research often partner in its completion. We syn

thesize information and guide stakeholders in applying it. This guidance is delivered in different formats

Carrots were harvested at the OARDC on May 15, 2017. The carrots were then washed, sorted, weighed for fresh biomass, and measured for root length, shoulder and tip diameter.
Three representative roots were weighed and used for external colorimeter readings.
These roots were then cut in half; three halves are weighed and dried in an oven, while the other three halves are used for internal colorimeter readings and then stored at -20 degrees Celsius for Brix measurements.

High tunnel growers understand that crop and other conditions in the tunnel can change rapidly, especially during the volatile conditions of spring. 'Normal' crop cycles and crop management will be discussed in programs held in Cleveland on March 24 and in Wooster on March 28. The sessions on season extension are part of OSUE programs focused on urban agriculture (http://cuyahoga.osu.edu/program-areas/agriculture-and-natural-resources/market-gardening-and-urban-farming) and success on small farms (http://agnr.osu.edu/small-farm-programs/small-farm-conferences-and-trade-shows).

Twenty-five growers from around western Ohio discussed major aspects of vegetable grafting (what it is, what role it can have in their business, and where to learn more) at Wilmington College. Thereafter, Bizhen Hu, M.S., demonstrated tomato grafting techniques and guided participants in grafting plants for testing on their farms. Bizhen is a PhD student in the VPSL and she studies the healing of newly-grafted plants.
