As many of you know, all of our research plots were put in at the end of October (rather late this year due to weather and equipment availability). About a week after that, an EF-1 tornado damaged 3 out of 4 of our greenhouse rooms. We kicked greenhouse harvesting into high gear to clear those rooms, and in a matter of days temporary panels had been put into place, and clean-up crews dispensed with all the broken glass. Interior glass is still in need of repair before we can be fully back up to speed, but it is amazing how quickly things have progressed in the past week. We have had some definite challenges this past year, but continue to move forward to bigger and better things!

Nick joined us this past summer at a student assistant. He continues to help a few hours per week while school is back in session, and was able to come out and get some plot planting lessons on Saturday. Great job, Nick!

It has been a LONG haul ... We have increased our yield plots to over 1700 (that's just in Wooster - we also have multi-location trials). We have filled over 19000 headrow tray cells. The weather has been a challenge. Too dry, then too wet. There are shared-equipment issues to resolve as well (we need more tractors with GPS units that can work with the existing plot/headrow planters). BUT ... it looks like everything should come together to get all research material into the ground Friday/Saturday/Sunday. I say this cautiously, as wrinkles always present themselves. We are quite late this year, and if our planting continues to be delayed, we run the risk of poor performance (skewed data). In the end, we will do everything we can. Then it's Mother Nature's turn! 🍻

This is a headrow tray in the making. Every tray has 120 of those little circular cells you see, 4 of which will be used for controls. This leaves 116 cells, each filled with a line or variety of barley that will go into the field for very specific observation and selection. Headrow trays are typically hand harvested by our wonderful and resilient summer crew (a.k.a. Team Awesome)! We will put in approx. 167 headrow trays this year, which translates to over 19,000 cells to be filled ... and over 19,000 evaluations to be done before harvest 2018!
We are also working hard to prepare for sowing over 1700 yield plots in Wooster alone. Many of those will be harvested by plot combine, and some of the newer lines (F2) will be closely selected and then hand harvested for purity. It is always exciting to see the fruits of our labor in the Spring! 🍻
