Still reflecting on so many memories from last week’s terrific Scot Symphonic Band & College of Wooster Pipe Band tour through New York State. From performing for 600 students from four
schools during our Buffalo area stop to sharing concerts with the amazing students of Washingtonville High School & Monroe-Woodbury High School near New York City to the privilege of working with award-winning composer, Jennifer Jolley, on her powerful MARCH! at Lehman College, this trip was a special one for us.

So we can guarantee future tour experiences, it’s not too late to contribute to the Scot Bands’ tour fund at wooster.edu/give/Wooster-priorities. Anything you can contribute will go a long way in guaranteeing this defining experience for generations of Wooster students to come.

Your Scot Bands are on the road!

For our 48th annual Spring Tour, the Scot Symphonic Band will present “Beside the Golden Door,” an immersive program that celebrates how those new to the United States profoundly shaped American music and culture during the 20th and 21st centuries. Their performances will feature two student guest artists, Tenor Saxophonist, Martin Zwergel, ’26, and Tenor, Ethan Yoder, ’25. Repertoire will include such classics as "Embraceable You" by George Gershwin, "Seventy Six Trombones" by Meredith Willson, and "God Bless America" by Irving Berlin, as well as new music by award winning contemporary composers Viet Cuong and Jennifer Jolley.

This year’s tour is a special one for us, as we’ll have the chance to deepen our understanding of the tour theme with a visit to Ellis Island, as well the remarkable opportunity to work with one of our featured composers, Jennifer Jolley, in a clinic setting on her powerful piece, MARCH!, which explores the use of music as a political tool in authoritarian regimes.

Because of these experiences, this tour is longer than most. If you feel so inclined, we invite you contribute to the Scot Bands tour fund by scanning the QR code below, which will go a long way in helping us continue this important tradition, especially at a time when tour costs are soaring.

Our schedule for the week is below—if we’re coming to an area near you, we would love to see you at one of our performances!

We know we've been a little quiet lately, but that's because we've been hard at work preparing for our first concerts of 2025!

That work will be on full display this weekend as the Scot Symphonic Band and The College of Wooster Pipe Band will perform in McGaw Chapel on Sunday, March 9 at 3:00 PM as the opening concert of the Scot Bands’ 48th annual spring tour.

The Scot Symphonic Band will present “Beside the Golden Door,” a program inspired by “The New Colossus,” the Emma Lazarus poem inscribed on the pedestal of The Statue of Liberty. The music will celebrate how those new to the United States profoundly shaped American music and culture during the 20th and 21st centuries. Featuring two student guest artists, Tenor Saxophonist, Martin Zwergel, ’26, and Tenor, Ethan Yoder, ’25, repertoire will include such classics as "Embraceable You" by George Gershwin, "Seventy Six Trombones" by Meredith Willson, and "God Bless America" by Irving Berlin. The program will conclude with Jennifer Jolley’s "MARCH!," which explores the use of music as a political tool in authoritarian regimes and Viet Cuong’s "John and Jim," which celebrates Ohioans Jim Obergefell and John Arthur who brought Marriage Equality to the United States.

The concert is free and open to the public. While it will not be live-streamed, it will be recorded, so if you'd like to view the performance once it's been mastered, just message us.

Be on the lookout for information about our upcoming Spring Tour, which will be revealed in the next few days.

Fall concert season has arrived!

First up, The College of Wooster Percussion Ensemble and Scot Symphonic Band will perform this Sunday, November 10 at 3:00 PM in the Scheide Music Center in Gault Recital Hall.

The performance will be highlighted by the world premiere of "Is Anyone Out There" by senior Composition major, Ethan Yoder, as well as contemporary composer, Jennifer Jolley’s "MARCH!." This award-winning work offers a searing reflection of how the march form has been used by authoritarian regimes to, as the composer notes, “to legitimize their stations, to provoke expansionist and nationalist fantasies, and to inflame their followers.”

Additional music by Gustav Holst, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Andrew Boysen, Jr,. and Matt Moore will also be featured.

The concert is free and open to the public. For those not able to attend in person, the performance will be live-streamed at https://youtube.com/live/x6l0r8y7eLs?feature=share

We hope to see you in-person or online Sunday for a terrific afternoon of music!

The Scot Band community mourns the loss of longtime Director of Bands and Professor
Emerita of Music, Nancy Ditmer.

A passionate advocate for music education, her leadership shaped the Scot Bands for decades and her legacy will live on through the thousands of Wooster alumni that she mentored.

Nancy Ditmer, Professor Emerita of Music, appointed to The College of Wooster in 1984. B. Mus., Capital University; M.A., University of Iowa. Professor Ditmer taught public school for 9 years in Arcanum and Versailles, Ohio, where her bands consistently earned top ratings in concert and marching festivals. As graduate assistant at Iowa, she taught conducting and instrumental methods, conducted the University Band, and assisted with the Hawkeye Marching Band, including writing portions of shows for the Rose and Peach Bowl games. Her duties at Wooster included directing the Scot Marching and Symphonic Bands, teaching music education and conducting courses, supervising student teachers, and chairing the Department of Music. She was the founder and director of the Wooster Music Camp, a summer program for middle and high school instrumental music students, which served thousands of young musicians in its 21 years of existence. Ditmer served as President of the North Central Division of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) (2002-04) and national President from 2012-2014; was President of the Ohio Music Education Association (1996-98) and Editor of Triad (1991-93); also chaired the Executive Director Task Force, the Government Relations Committee, the Da Capo Board, and was a member of the Strategic Plan Committee. Ditmer served as Co-Chair for the 2009 OMEA Professional Development Conference – OMEA at the Foundation of Music Education – held in Columbus, January 15-17, 2009. For NAfME, she was a member of the Strategic Plan Committee and served as reviewer and editor for Model Music Programs. Additionally, she served on the Board of the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education, three terms as President of the Ohio Private College Instrumental Conductors Association (OPCICA), and as a consultant for a U.S. Department of Education grant for the Canton (OH) Symphony Orchestra. She presented workshops throughout the country and in Europe, South America, and Australia on such topics as advocacy, rehearsal techniques, professional development for music teachers, assessment, classroom management, and state and national music education initiatives. Ditmer maintained an active guest conducting and adjudication schedule throughout Ohio and across the country, and served as the primary adjudicator for the New South Wales School Band Festival in Sydney, Australia. She was the recipient of the 2006 OMEA Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor bestowed by the association, and was designated by NAfME as a Lowell Mason Fellow, awarded by this national organization in recognition of outstanding contributions to music education. In April of 2016, Ditmer was recognized with the Alumni Achievement Award from her undergraduate alma mater, Capital University.
