AAT deficiency is an inherited genetic defect which causes severe loss of lung function, making individuals especially vulnerable to infections or irritants in the air.

“Pink flags is where lives can be saved,” said Dr. Haider, assistant professor of psychiatry & behavioral sciences and obstetrics & gynecology at UMass Chan Medical School. “This is the illness that kind of happens in plain sight, so it’s so critical to talk about the subtle signs and symptoms that develop: early onset paranoia, maybe some early hypomania, the mood is changing, especially in the context of disrupted sleep and sudden interrupted sleep after having a baby.”
