The Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing marked the end of the Graduate Entry Pathway (GEP) Program and the start of the Direct Entry Program during a reception on Monday.

This was the last year of the GEP Program, which has provided individuals with bachelor degrees in fields other than nursing with the training they need to become licensed RNs before earning a Doctor of Nursing Practice or PhD for the last 20 years. The 2026 supplemental state budget includes $10 million for a pilot scholarship program at UMass Chan intended to boost the number of students going into family medicine: https://direc.to/oH_J

The Association of American Medical Colleges, in a 2024 report, projects the nation will face a shortage of 20,000 to 40,0000 primary care physicians, including family medicine practitioners, by 2036.

The pilot scholarship provides aid to medical students pursuing family medicine careers who demonstrate financial need and commit to practicing for five years in an approved community health center in an underserved area or hospital health care system.

UMass Chan has received state funding for a pilot scholarship program aimed at boosting the number of family medicine physicians.
