WPI Global Projects Program

WPI Global Projects Program Through the Global Projects Program students collaborate with faculty and community members at more

The GPP provides WPI students with the opportunity to complete any of their projects: IQP, MQP, or HUA Requirement off campus at one of our Project Centers. These projects find solutions to issues that impact the people who make up local communities around the world. WPI has sent more science and engineering students abroad (about 50% travel overseas for project work) than any other private university.

Hello from Kyoto! Today is day 1 of our Instagram takeover, and we are ready to share some of the cool things we did today! To start, Adrian and his group went and went to map the hidden gem that is Kikihuma, by classifying the buildings that are there! Helenas group had a group meeting today with our sponsors so we had an action packed day! We went to Nishiki Market to grab a quick bite for lunch, and then headed into town for some light shopping. We also stopped by a local temple to check it out! But don’t worry, we are never too busy to stop and smell the flowers! 💐 We also stopped at our favorite cafe to grab some Matcha, a local specialty! We also got the opportunity to talk to some Kyoto locals! Tune in later to our story to see Calder head to Hiroshima and the rest of the group head to round one arcade! We also have some big surprises coming up tomorrow!!!

Hello from Nantucket, MA! As part of our IQP, 18 WPI students have been working with organizations all across the island and contributing to meaningful work!

First up is the Maria Mitchell Association, where students are reconnecting past campers and exploring how hands-on science programs shaped their curiosity, careers, and love for nature.

Students are also working with the Nantucket Fire Department to improve emergency response and public safety by mapping out all island fire hydrants and water sources.

In partnership with the Nantucket Housing Department and Remain, one project investigates how underused second-story spaces in downtown buildings could be converted to affordable, year-round housing.

Another project is working with the Nantucket Litter Derby, which is diving into the islands litter problem caused by intentional and unintentional littering.

Lastly, a group of students are working with Our House, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering local high school students, to improve programming and strengthen connections for local youths.

Godaften fra København, WPI! This is the E25 boats team! Our projects mission is to spread awareness to promote the creation of a zero-emission zone for diesel engine tour boats and planes in Copenhagen’s canals, and to create resources for our sponsors to run campaign for parliamentary action towards the zero-emission zone.

Since we’ve arrived in Denmark, we have been recording data on the air and noise pollution on the seaplanes and tour boats in populated parts of the canals. Today and next week we are presenting for the 2 central city councils to show them our current findings and to share our ideas for next steps to take.

Over the next couple of weeks we would like to plan public events for stakeholder groups, such as kayak clubs, and we are also going to create an email list of supporters for our cause so once we create a campaign we already will have a following.

It has been a great time exploring Denmark and learning what it takes to be a green city. Thanks for tuning in this week and we will see you all back in Worcester during A-term!

Goddag from the Copenhagen cohort’s Community Corals project team!

We’ve been examining the Community Corals installed by the Center for Life and Regeneration in Refshaleøen and proposing regenerative solutions to enhance their impact on biodiversity and local engagement.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been working on finding plant-friendly dyes to color the coral sculptures while moss propagates on their surface, designing a dome-shaped greenhouse to assist with moss growth in Refshaleøen’s dry climate, and developing workshop plans to engage the local community.

As the term comes to an end and we wrap up this phase of the project, we’re excited to keep designing our final deliverables: a functional workshop that engages the local community with staining and decorating the corals, as well as a design for the dome-shaped greenhouse to aid in coral moss growth.

Keep an eye on our Instagram stories this week to hear more about the corals and the rest of the Copenhagen cohort!
