Did you know? While composing his opera The Fiery Angel, Sergei Prokofiev was reportedly evicted from his apartment because of noise complaints.

The story goes that his landlord kicked him out after he played the exact same dissonant chord 218 times in a row, relentlessly searching for the perfect sound.

While the exact number might be the stuff of classical music legend, it perfectly illustrates Prokofiev’s intense, uncompromising dedication to finding the right harmonic language for a very dark and dramatic opera.

Roan Testa's motivation for majoring in theatre wasn't a Broadway dream, but growth as an actor, finding confidence, and being part of a close-knit campus community. She found it all in VPA’s theatre program.

She participated in many productions during her time in the department, but the most memorable role for Roan was Columbia in The Rocky Horror Show. Acting alongside her closest friends, she gained the confidence to pursue roles she previously didn’t think she could portray. Recently, she completed her senior thesis by taking on the iconic role of Lady Macbeth.

This spring, VPA faculty members recognized Roan's accomplishments with the department’s Theatre Foundations Award. She graduated today with degrees in theatre and English and a deep appreciation for how the arts can spur personal growth.
