As we look towards Memorial Day 2026, we pause to honor the life, service, and enduring legacy of Leonard Ronald Copeland. Leonard was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, scholar, brother of Phi Beta Sigma, and proud United States Navy Corpsman.

From December 6, 1965 to September 5, 1969, he served his country with courage and distinction. As a Navy Corpsman assigned to the Fleet Marine Force, he provided critical medical support during a pivotal time in our nation’s history. Having completed Field Medical School Service in preparation for that responsibility, his bravery and sacrifice, he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with Fleet Marine Force Combat Insignia, the Bronze Star Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. His honorable discharge marked not an end, but the continuation of a life rooted in discipline, commitment, and purpose.

In addition to serving his country, Leonard pursued higher education with determination, entering Central State University and later earning his master’s degree from The Ohio State University. He embodied the principles of Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Service as a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated. Carrying those values into his professional life and community, his example reflects a man who believed that service extends beyond the uniform, and into every season of life.
