Brotherhood Scholars - Eastern Michigan University

Brotherhood Scholars - Eastern Michigan University The Brotherhood Scholars was designed to engage, empower, retain and graduate more males of color at Our objectives are:

1.

The BrotherHOOD Initiative is part of a university-wide effort to retain and graduate more males of color at Eastern Michigan University. We are a fellowship of kinsmen (students, faculty, staff, alumni and community partners) bound together and driven by a common desire to be educated, healthy, well-balanced and successful men of integrity and purpose. We live by the philosophical principal of "u

buntu", which inspires us to strive for personal excellence then to reach back to Help Others Obtain Degrees. Instead of addressing deficits and challenges to overcome, we employ success-driven strategies built around developmental theory and concepts of health and wellness. To engage students early and help to ease their transition to college life at a predominantly white institution.

2. To connect them with valuable academic resources and identify possible financial support mechanisms.

3. To foster a greater sense of brotherhood, camaraderie and support among first-generation and underrepresented males on campus.

4. To create opportunities for students to network and build meaningful relationships with faculty and professional staff outside of the classroom.

5. To address issues of masculinity and sexuality to counteract socialized misogynistic and hyper-masculine attitudes, creating an affirming space for gay, bisexual and questioning male students.

July marking Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, we recognize the different kinds of mental health experiences that occur in BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) communities.

With July being Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, it is important to recognize the different kinds of mental health experiences that occur in BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) communities. With the awareness being nationally recognized back in 2008, its sole purpose has been to improve access to mental health treatment and promote public awareness of it as well. Here are some things you can do during Minority Mental Health Awareness Month and if you would like to know more information or find additional resources, please visit NAMI.0rg
