This is .aldanondo. For the last two semesters, senior and soon-to-be Preservation Studies graduate student Olivia has been documenting the experiences of Lincoln Consolidated Schools alums. We’ve gotten such a vivid picture of Ypsilanti proper via our Roosevelt Oral History Project, but we need those vital, rural voices of LCS too! Olivia has traveled to homes, senior centers and one room schoolhouses to conduct these interviews with alums, teachers, custodians, and community members, and last week, she got the chance to showcase the project to EMU heavyweights at the Emerald Celebration! We love it when students take initiative to not only DO the work, but to TALK ABOUT THE WORK too!!
Self-advocacy is high on our priority list here in the Archives and COHR, and Olivia is crushing it.

It has been an awesome week hosting two alt-spring break students from Wayne State’s School of Information Sciences. Sydney has been busy processing some of our smaller collections and digitizing. Amanda has been sitting in on oral history interviews and learning back end processing.

This is our mission in action! Quality hands on learning opportunities, ethical stewardship and access. Thanks to for sharing two of your best and brightest.

Whenever they walk out with the gear for the first time, on their way to solo interview, we always cheer them out.

It was a touch and go negotiation amongst archives staff, but we finally ordered our new EMU Aerie jerseys, as modeled by grad student and director . We’ve always figuratively worn our values on our sleeves at COHR and University Archives, but now we literally do. Our motto, People Not Projects, reflects our commitment to emphasize trust over output stats.

When you see one of these jerseys in public this Spring, consider it your invitation to make history with us!

No one knows your secrets like clericals.

The backbone of our program! Major props to .hac and for presenting to a rapt audience at the OHA annual meeting. It wasn’t that long ago that was presenting at his first conference as a grad student either and he killed it asking some really hard and really important questions.

I am so very proud of the work that we do and being able to see these humans go out and so their thing is a gift.

Bravissimo!

It was a momentous summer in the Center for Oral History Research! Preservation Studies graduate student and lecturer .hac helmed the Aerie throughout Pride Month and beyond, hosting popup interviewing events at Ypsi Pride, Vertex Trans and Nonbinary Meetups, Ann Arbor Pride, and the Jim Toy Community Center Open House. Huge shoutouts to students Micah Bookout, Olivia Aldanondo and Wilder Cook for stepping up to the headphones and interviewing on the spot at each event. They are each veterans of the program now, and we’re so glad to have them.
Special thanks to returning Oral History Program students and for helping out too—it is always good to see your faces, and to hear any new stories. And as always, thanks to for the boss decor and graphic design help.
The Aerie mobile booth is showing the kind of teaching/community/preservation strength that we hoped/dreamt that it would. Thanks for letting us listen, and let us know what you need from us.

Alexis, Brooke, Amber and Matt could not be more thrilled to see what is happening in the Archives and in the Center, which celebrates its first birthday this November!

We have found that too often, oral history programs and orgs define themselves by the number of interviews they have, or the number of hours of recorded audio they have preserved. We’ve seen the narrator review process removed because “we just have too many interviews and projects in our backlog to deal with.”

History is people, not projects. Oral history is experience, not metadata.
