A MONUMENTAL ENDEAVOUR COMPLETED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF QUANTITY SURVEYING- KDU
On August 26, 2024, the serene Southern Campus of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), in Sooriyawewa, became the epicentre of a pivotal event for the university’s Quantity Surveying program. The Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS), one of the world’s most respected authorities in the construction and Quantity Surveying fields, made their highly anticipated visit to assess KDU's accreditation status—a move that could forever shape the future of the university.
This wasn’t just a regular campus visit. It was an extraordinary convergence of academic, industry, and international leaders—a day that could see KDU rise to new global heights in education. The panel was led by none other than Mrs. Catherine Squire, Operations Manager and Education & Events Manager at AIQS. Accompanying her were industry titans like Professor Chitra Weddikkara, a highly influential figure in the academic world and Managing Director of QServe (Pvt) Ltd, and Mr. Upul Shantha, an authoritative voice from the Construction Cost Information Service (Pvt) Ltd. Representing AIQS at the highest level was Mr. Ajantha Premarathna, Board Director of AIQS’ International Chapter for Region 2—a man known for his rigorous standards and keen insight into the field.
A Day Packed with Purpose and Precision
The visit began at 08:30 AM sharp, as the university’s lush surroundings greeted the esteemed AIQS panel, ushering in a day filled with detailed discussions and thorough assessments. After a welcoming breakfast, which gave the KDU team an opportunity to engage with the AIQS members on an informal level, the serious work began.
KDU’s senior officials met with the panel and the stage was set for the Quantity Surveying Department to make their case. This was their moment to shine, to highlight the department's unique strengths, achievements, and its alignment with international standards.
The AIQS panel then met with the academic staff of the department, followed by a key meeting with the visiting staff and other internal department members. Every question, every critique, and every conversation was aimed at ensuring that KDU's program met the rigorous standards expected by AIQS.
Post-lunch, the delegation was introduced to the cutting-edge technologies that power KDU’s teaching methods. The BIM (Building Information Modeling) Lab presentation provided a glimpse into how KDU’s QS program is embracing the future of the industry. This state-of-the-art facility is where students learn to merge traditional practices with modern technological innovations—exactly the kind of forward-thinking AIQS seeks to promote in accredited institutions.
However, the visit wasn't just about presentations and meetings. The AIQS team conducted a meticulous inspection of the department's files and documents at—a crucial step in the accreditation process that ensures transparency, accountability, and quality in the program's operations.
As the day unfolded, AIQS did not only focus on the present but also looked towards the past and future of KDU's QS program. They met with alumni members whose professional experiences and career trajectories serve as the ultimate testaments to the strength of the program. Following that, the panel engaged with current students, whose voices represent the next generation of quantity surveyors. These interactions were critical, as they offered firsthand insights into the academic environment and the program's real-world applicability.
A tea break provided a moment of respite, but the day was far from over. The final highlight was a comprehensive tour of the KDU Southern Campus showcasing the institution’s infrastructure and facilities.
As the sun set on Sooriyawewa, marking the end of a whirlwind day, the gravity of the event became apparent. The AIQS accreditation review would place KDU at the forefront of international Quantity Surveying education, setting it apart as a leader in the field. Accreditation would not only elevate KDU’s standing in the global arena but also provide its students with international recognition, paving the way for countless future opportunities.
