It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of one of our own. Lokitha Minura, a cherished student in our university family, has tragically left us after a long, courageous battle following the tragic accident on the 1st of November.

For two months, Lokitha fought bravely in the ICU, showing us the strength and resilience of his spirit. Despite the odds, he held on, just as he lived his life—with determination, courage, and unwavering hope. Sadly, his fight has come to an end, and we are left grieving the loss of a beautiful soul taken far too soon.

Lokitha was more than a student to us; he was a light in the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He radiated kindness, always the first to lend a helping hand and the first to listen when someone needed a friend. His empathy and unwavering positivity made him beloved by classmates, staff, and all who crossed his path.

His loss leaves a void in our community that words can scarcely capture. We remember him not just for his remarkable potential but for the warmth he brought into every room and the joy he shared through his acts of selflessness.

During this difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with Lokitha’s family and friends. May they find strength and comfort in the beautiful memories of his life, however short, which was a gift to us all.

May you attain the supreme bliss of Nirvana, dear Lokitha. Your kindness, smile, and spirit will forever live on in our hearts.

With heavy hearts, we share the devastating loss of Sinthujan Kayilanathan, a bright soul taken from us too soon. After fighting valiantly for 23 days in the ICU following the accident on the 1st of November, he has now found peace.

Sinthujan was a kind soul and friendly soul. An avid traveller, he hailed all the way from the north in Jaffna and began his adventures at the southern campus. You will be missed by all your brothers and sisters, faculty and staff from the Department of Quantity Surveying.

May his athma attain moksha and find eternal rest in the embrace of the divine. Om Shanti. 🙏

A MONUMENTAL ENDEAVOUR COMPLETED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF QUANTITY SURVEYING- KDU

On August 26, 2024, the serene Southern Campus of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), in Sooriyawewa, became the epicentre of a pivotal event for the university’s Quantity Surveying program. The Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS), one of the world’s most respected authorities in the construction and Quantity Surveying fields, made their highly anticipated visit to assess KDU's accreditation status—a move that could forever shape the future of the university.

This wasn’t just a regular campus visit. It was an extraordinary convergence of academic, industry, and international leaders—a day that could see KDU rise to new global heights in education. The panel was led by none other than Mrs. Catherine Squire, Operations Manager and Education & Events Manager at AIQS. Accompanying her were industry titans like Professor Chitra Weddikkara, a highly influential figure in the academic world and Managing Director of QServe (Pvt) Ltd, and Mr. Upul Shantha, an authoritative voice from the Construction Cost Information Service (Pvt) Ltd. Representing AIQS at the highest level was Mr. Ajantha Premarathna, Board Director of AIQS’ International Chapter for Region 2—a man known for his rigorous standards and keen insight into the field.

A Day Packed with Purpose and Precision

The visit began at 08:30 AM sharp, as the university’s lush surroundings greeted the esteemed AIQS panel, ushering in a day filled with detailed discussions and thorough assessments. After a welcoming breakfast, which gave the KDU team an opportunity to engage with the AIQS members on an informal level, the serious work began.

KDU’s senior officials met with the panel and the stage was set for the Quantity Surveying Department to make their case. This was their moment to shine, to highlight the department's unique strengths, achievements, and its alignment with international standards.

The AIQS panel then met with the academic staff of the department, followed by a key meeting with the visiting staff and other internal department members. Every question, every critique, and every conversation was aimed at ensuring that KDU's program met the rigorous standards expected by AIQS.

Post-lunch, the delegation was introduced to the cutting-edge technologies that power KDU’s teaching methods. The BIM (Building Information Modeling) Lab presentation provided a glimpse into how KDU’s QS program is embracing the future of the industry. This state-of-the-art facility is where students learn to merge traditional practices with modern technological innovations—exactly the kind of forward-thinking AIQS seeks to promote in accredited institutions.

However, the visit wasn't just about presentations and meetings. The AIQS team conducted a meticulous inspection of the department's files and documents at—a crucial step in the accreditation process that ensures transparency, accountability, and quality in the program's operations.

As the day unfolded, AIQS did not only focus on the present but also looked towards the past and future of KDU's QS program. They met with alumni members whose professional experiences and career trajectories serve as the ultimate testaments to the strength of the program. Following that, the panel engaged with current students, whose voices represent the next generation of quantity surveyors. These interactions were critical, as they offered firsthand insights into the academic environment and the program's real-world applicability.

A tea break provided a moment of respite, but the day was far from over. The final highlight was a comprehensive tour of the KDU Southern Campus showcasing the institution’s infrastructure and facilities.

As the sun set on Sooriyawewa, marking the end of a whirlwind day, the gravity of the event became apparent. The AIQS accreditation review would place KDU at the forefront of international Quantity Surveying education, setting it apart as a leader in the field. Accreditation would not only elevate KDU’s standing in the global arena but also provide its students with international recognition, paving the way for countless future opportunities.

This visit will undoubtedly signal a new era for the university, one defined by global partnerships, cutting-edge education, and unparalleled opportunities for its students. The stakes have never been higher, and the world is watching. Our sincere appreciation to the Panel of Judges, KDU Management and all those instrumental in organising this monumental endeavour.
