This summer, Brown Lecture Board, in collaboration with the Watson Institute, is back to present a special summer panel focused on issues of race in media coverage. The event will feature CNN correspondent Sara Sidner, New York Times correspondent and now South African Bureau Chief John Eligon, and our moderator, Jon Klein, the former president of CNN.

Join us on Tuesday, June 15th at 2:00pm EST for what promises to be an insightful conversation on media and race with two of the highest level journalists who reported on the murder of George Floyd, among numerous other impactful issues. On behalf of the French and Francophone Studies DUG, we are proud to announce the publication of our most recent issue of Mot pour mot, Brown University’s only French-language student publication.

Our magazine features literary and artistic submissions in both English and French from all undergraduate class years. Our literary genres include poetry, essays, travel narratives, and miniatures, on topics such as art history, current events, and media analysis. Our artistic submissions include photographs and illustrations. We are proud to feature the work of so many talented students.

This issue would not have been possible without our staff who have worked tirelessly on Mot pour mot over the past several weeks.

The Department of French Studies invites you to "Montaigne Stumbles into the Anthropocene," a lecture by Phillip John Usher this Wednesday 24 February via Zoom!

Phillip John Usher is Professor and Chair of French Literature, Thought and Culture at New York University, where he is also affiliated with the Department of Comparative Literature. He is the author, editor, or translator of nine volumes. His latest books are: Exterranean: Extraction in the Humanist Anthropocene (Fordham, 2019) and, with Pauline Goul, Early Modern Écologies: Beyond English Ecocriticism (Amerstdam, 2020).

The Department of French Studies is hosting a lecture (in French) by Prof. Mireille Huchon-Rieu, Professor of French literature at the Sorbonne!

A specialist of the History of the French language and of literature from the Renaissance, Huchon hasedited Rabelais’s complete works for the Pléiade (1994) and written his authoritative biography (2011). Huchon is also known for work on the Euvres de Louïze Labé Lionnoize (1555) thanks to her influential book LouiseLabé: une créature de papier (2006), which examines the poetic culture of Lyons and practices of fictionalized authorship. Most recently, she is the author of Le Labéryinthe (2020).

This is a great opportunity to hear about the research of other professors beyond Brown, as well as brush up on your language skills! We hope to see you guys there :)

Something called both “French” and “theory” came ashore in the Anglo-American academic scene of the 1970s. Supposedly both impenetrable and hegemonic, it was seen to reconstitute what was discussed in programs in literature and the social sciences, and how it was discussed. Today the shoreline of study in the humanities has been transformed, but French theory’s moment is presumed to have past. This course will trace that history through key French texts (read in translation) written between the 1960s and 1990s. Taught in English.

As we approach Winter Break, consider reflecting on French-language or francophone-related coursework you have completed this semester (or in a previous semester) and seeing if you might want to submit to Mot pour mot! We accept content in both French and English, including any literary, academic, or art submissions (photographs, drawings, creative short papers, poems, translations, etc.) related to Francophone cultures, and we would love to feature your pieces! All disciplines are welcome (history, comparative literature, political science, literary arts, etc.) so long as your submission is in French and/or relates to the French-speaking world.

French-language learners are welcome to submit! Submissions of written work need NOT be perfect; if selected for publication, our editors will help you refine your pieces for style, clarity, and grammar.

As Brown’s only French-language student publication, Mot pour mot is published semesterly by the French and Francophone Studies DUG. We provide a platform for French-speaking students of any level to share their literary and artistic works with the Brown community.

IMPORTANT! To semester level 07 seniors: if you wish to declare French and Francophone Studies as an additional concentration, you MUST ensure that Prof. Ravindranathan approves your declaration no later than 5pm EST on THIS FRIDAY (Friday, December 4, 2020).
Do not wait until the last minute to do so. Remember, you can always change your mind and drop a concentration later, but this is your last chance to ADD a concentration.
