ALIUS

ALIUS ALIUS is an international and interdisciplinary group of researchers investigating the diversity of consciousness. In Latin, alius means “different”.

ALIUS is an international and interdisciplinary research group dedicated to the investigation of all aspects of consciousness, with a specific focus on non-ordinary or understudied conscious states traditionally classified as altered states of consciousness. This lexical choice reflects the group’s mission to study the diversity of consciousness in a systematic manner. ALIUS puts a particular stre

ss on the need for a naturalistic approach to all aspects of consciousness, including states and experiences which have long been unduly associated to parapsychology and pseudoscientific hypotheses. To this end, it fosters a unique interdisciplinary collaboration of researchers, involving neuroscientists, psychologists, philosophers of mind, psychiatrists and anthropologists, towards the development of a systematic and scientific model of consciousness supported by both theoretical work and experimental studies. This collaboration may take the form of joint articles, blog posts, editorial work on special issues, thematic workshops and international conferences. Aside from the activity of its research members, ALIUS publishes an annual Bulletin containing interviews with prominent researchers and scientists working on specific states of consciousness, including non-ordinary states induced by meditation, dreaming, psychosis, psychotropic drugs, hypnosis and rituals.

Dear all,
I am a researcher from the University of Lille (France) working on consciousness and with two colleagues from the University of Pittsburgh I am conducting a study on modified states of consciousness and philosophical worldviews. We are looking for participants to join our study.

- The Details
- The Task: A thought-provoking online questionnaire.
- Time: Approximately 10 minutes.
- Focus: Your perspectives on existence, time, mind, and the nature of conscious experience.
- Why Participate?
By contributing, you’re helping researchers understand the significance of consciousness and the origin of our philosophical intuitions. Plus, the questions themselves offer a moment of self-reflection on what you really believe about the world.

On May 30th, the workshop in memory of our friend and colleague Martin Fortier will take place at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Paris (Paris, France), after having been postponed for the first time due to the pandemic.

Welcome all!

In 2020, our friend and colleague Martin Fortier, a doctoral student at EHESS attached to the Jean-Nicod Institute, passed away prematurely. With his two initial training courses in philosophy and anthropology, his research has a strong interdisciplinary dimension, at the crossroads of the social sciences and the cognitive sciences. This workshop honors the memory of a remarkable young researcher by addressing some of his favorite themes.

The presentations will be in English, and the round table will be in French and English.

PROGRAM
10:15-11:15 Juan C. González (UAEM, Cuernavaca), "Classification, reality and epistemic value of psychedelic hallucinations"
11h15-12h15 David Dupuis (INSERM, IRIS), "Can psychedelics really change the world? Hallucinogenic substances and cultural evolution".

Abstract:
In this interview, Pr. González and Dr. Koroma discuss the purpose and the challenges of an interdisciplinary study of consciousness. They do so by first tracing back the history of ALIUS, a 15 years-old international association dedicated to the scientific study of the diversity of consciousness. By discussing how we can incorporate views from multiple disciplines, contexts, and methodologies in our understanding of consciousness, they offer insights into the role of science and philosophy. They further address the mystery of consciousness, the place of first-hand subjective experience and empirical data in modelling consciousness, and how we can navigate among multiple definitions of consciousness and related notions associated with it like sentience or the spiritual realm.
