Velkommen til de nye studentene!

I går tok vi imot det andre kullet på LLM-programmet i EU- og EØS-rett. Årets program er helt fullt, med omkring 30 norske og internasjonale studenter.

Under gårsdagens introduksjon fikk studentene velkomsttale fra dekan Sigrid Schultz, høre noen vitser om engelsk med norsk aksent, og hilse på både forelesere og mentorer.

Vi ønsker årets kull lykke til!

Gir ikke EØS-avtalen vern mot EU-toll?

Norge kan havne i en vanskelig situasjon hvis det bryter ut handelskrig mellom USA og EU, spesielt på grunn av EUs mulige beskyttelsestiltak på stål og aluminium. WTO-rettslige komplikasjoner og mangel på en domstol for tvister gjør situasjonen utfordrende. Halvard Fredriksen, professor i rettsvitenskap og medlem av Eldring-utvalget, har skrevet en kronikk om dette i Klassekampen.

Guest Lecture with Tobias Judin: The AI Act vs. the GDPR – Protection of Fundamental Rights in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.

The EU’s AI Act was the world’s first comprehensive law on AI. However, as most AI models are trained on personal data, many argue that data protection law remains the main AI regulation. How do these legal frameworks interrelate, and which rights do we have when big tech companies want to use our data to train AI models?

Tobias Judin heads the International Section at the Norwegian Data Protection Authority, where he is responsible for international cooperation, cross-border cases and cases regarding international transfers. Additionally, he represents Norway in the European Data Protection Board. Tobias is a lawyer, technologist and sinologist by education.

Today all our researchers and LLM-students met for Christmas lunch, marking the end of a semester. It has been a hectic semester, but with lots of interesting events, publications, and teaching. Vi er glade for å annonsere at førsteamanuensis Malgorzata Agnieszka Cyndecka er oppnevnt som nytt medlem av Personvernnemnda for perioden 2025–2028 av Digitaliserings- og forvaltningsdepartementet!

Personvernnemnda er klageorgan for vedtak fattet av Datatilsynet. Nemnda har syv medlemmer med personlige stedfortredere som alle oppnevnes for fire år av gangen, med adgang til én gjenoppnevning. Gratulerer Malgorzata!

Welcome to CENTENOL´s hybrid seminar: "Where is the single market heading?" on October 4th from 12:30-13:30.

As Europe stands at a crossroads, this year’s Letta and Draghi reports—penned by former Italian prime ministers Enrico Letta and Mario Draghi—explore how the EU can strengthen competitiveness while maintaining its social economy model and core values.

In this conversation, Professor Catherine Barnard and Deputy Director of Labour and Social Affairs, Mona Næss, will highlight some selected key findings of the Letta and Draghi reports and offer their own reflections on how to address the challenges ahead. Catherine will add a UK perspective on European competitiveness, while Mona will offer insights from the EEA and social rights fields. Together, they will discuss the unique challenges and opportunities for non-member states, including the UK and EEA/EFTA-states, as the EU shapes its competitive future.

I dag gjekk semesterets første LLM-ekskursjon av stabelen. Føremålet med denne typen ekskursjonar er at LLM-studentane skal få møte både offentlege instansar og privat næringsliv lokalt her i Bergen for å høyre om korleis EU/EØS-retten påverkar deira arbeidskvardag.

I dag gjekk turen til Konkurransetilsynet der LLM-studentane fekk høyre om både organisasjonen, og korleis EU/EØS-retten påverkar sakene dei jobbar med. For studentane som dette semesteret følgjer Competition Law-kurset som obligatorisk del av LLM-graden var dette veldig kjekt og interessant!

Silje Hagen Sofienlund has joined BERG as a Ph.D. candidate, and is affiliated with the research project LaW-BALANCE. Her thesis will investigate how current law regulates the balance between work and leisure time. Congratulations with the position, Silje! Ved Det juridiske fakultet er det ledig ei stilling som postdoktor knytt til Centre on the Europeanisation of Norwegian Law (CENTENOL). Stillinga er knytt til senterets arbeidspakke om EØS-rettens betyding for norsk trygderett.
